In the wake of Ukraine’s missile strike on Russian territory using U.S.-supplied long-range Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), tensions between the United States and Russia have escalated dramatically. Russia’s response, including explicit threats and an expanded nuclear doctrine, signals a grave shift in the geopolitical landscape. Yet, despite these developments, there has been no visible indication that the United States has raised its national threat level or communicated additional security measures to the public.
Russia’s Threats: A Wake-Up Call
Explicit Warnings
Russia’s reaction to Ukraine’s missile strike was swift and severe. The Kremlin accused the U.S. of direct provocation and warned of “retaliatory measures” that could target American interests. These statements, coupled with Russia’s nuclear policy update to include responses to attacks involving Western weapons, leave little doubt about the seriousness of their intentions.
Expanded Nuclear Doctrine
President Vladimir Putin’s decree lowering the threshold for nuclear engagement represents a significant escalation. By explicitly including Western-supplied weapons in its policy, Russia has heightened the stakes, bringing the world closer to a potential nuclear confrontation than at any time since the Cold War. This marks the first major adjustment to Russia’s nuclear doctrine in decades, reflecting the severity of the situation and its implications for global stability.
The U.S. Response: A Concerning Silence
No Change to U.S. Threat Level
Despite Russia’s explicit warnings and the growing risks, the United States has not officially raised its national threat level. The National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS), designed to inform the public of credible threats, has not been updated since May 2023. This lack of action raises questions about whether the U.S. government is adequately addressing the potential dangers posed by recent developments.
While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) may be taking measures behind the scenes, the absence of an updated advisory leaves citizens without clear guidance on how to prepare for potential risks. In contrast, some European nations, like Sweden and Finland, have distributed crisis preparedness guides to their citizens, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
Missed Opportunity for Transparency
Public communication is crucial in times of potential crisis. While national security agencies may be quietly implementing measures, failing to inform the public undermines trust and preparedness. Transparent communication fosters trust and ensures citizens are informed participants in national security. Citizens deserve to know what steps are being taken to protect the country and what they can do to stay safe.
Why This Threat Must Be Taken Seriously
Potential for Retaliation
Russia’s threats are not just rhetoric. They have the means to carry out retaliatory actions against the U.S., including:
- Cyberattacks: Targeting critical infrastructure such as energy grids, financial systems, and government networks.
- Targeting U.S. Allies: Striking vulnerable NATO members or regions where U.S. influence is strong.
- Economic Disruption: Leveraging alliances with nations like China and Iran to undermine U.S. economic interests globally.
Global Consequences
Failing to take these threats seriously could have far-reaching consequences:
- Nuclear Brinkmanship: Russia’s lowered threshold for nuclear engagement increases the risk of catastrophic miscalculation.
- Strained Alliances: NATO allies may question U.S. leadership if it appears unprepared to address these threats.
- Erosion of Public Trust: Citizens lose confidence in their government when they feel left out of critical security discussions.
Steps the U.S. Must Take Now
- Raise the Threat Level:
The U.S. should immediately update its NTAS to reflect the increased risks. This move would signal that the government is taking the situation seriously and actively preparing for potential challenges. - Enhance Cybersecurity Measures:
Strengthen defenses against potential cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure. With the growing prevalence of cyberwarfare, coordination with private-sector partners is essential to mitigate risks and minimize vulnerabilities. - Engage in Diplomatic Efforts:
Despite the tensions, diplomacy remains crucial. Maintaining open channels of communication with Russia and allies can help prevent further escalation. History has shown that even in periods of heightened tension, diplomacy has played a pivotal role in averting major conflicts. - Prepare the Public:
Issue clear guidance to citizens on potential risks and preparedness measures. This could include steps to safeguard against cyber disruptions, stockpiling essentials, or other practical actions. Public awareness and readiness are key components of national resilience. - Reassure Allies:
Reaffirm commitments to NATO and other allies, demonstrating leadership and unity in the face of growing threats. Clear and consistent communication with allied nations helps ensure a coordinated response to any potential escalation.
Conclusion
Russia’s explicit threats following Ukraine’s missile strike demand immediate and serious attention. While national security agencies may be taking action behind the scenes, the lack of public acknowledgment and transparency leaves the U.S. appearing unprepared. Raising the threat level, enhancing cybersecurity, and prioritizing diplomacy are essential steps to address the situation and protect national and global security.
This is not a moment for complacency. The stakes are too high, and the risks too great, to ignore the potential consequences. Vigilance is a shared responsibility, requiring decisive action from leadership and proactive readiness from citizens. It is imperative for the U.S. to act decisively and communicate clearly to ensure preparedness and stability in these volatile times.build public trust in these volatile times.

I’m in complete agreement with your assessment and conclusion here, John.
I had heard that crisis preparedness guides have been distributed to Swedish and Finish citizens. A well-informed friend of mine who lives in Norway shares the latest there with me.
Recently, Norway’s Defense Minister Gram and Ukraine’s Defense Minister Umerov appeared in a short press conference. Norway is committed to helping Ukraine with increases in financial support. My understanding is that Denmark is doing the same. It appears that the Nordic countries are very concerned with Russian aggression. A good portion of the Nordic people think of Putin as a madman as far as I can tell.
Here is the press conference video if interested:

I have been watching videos of the Ukrainian resistance and it appears that they are getting quite good at the use of drones among other things. Here is one of the videos I’ve seen lately from this channel:
You are probably already familiar with this channel and others like it. It is difficult to watch soldiers being killed but at least there are no close ups here (You see no blood in other words though you know some of these strikes were disastrous.). I watch these things occasionally to try and understand the situation on the ground over there.
If you have the time, would you watch this video and let me know what percentage of it you think is propaganda? I’m sure some of it may be but it’s hard to argue with video footage like this. If you are busy and don’t have time for it maybe you could watch a short part of it and give me some feedback.
Thanks for this important, informative, and interesting post.
May God bless your day.
Thank you very much, Chris, for your detailed and thoughtful comment—very nice! The Nordic countries’ proactive measures, including financial support and crisis preparedness efforts, really highlight their serious stance on Russian aggression. It’s clear they’re closely watching the situation, and I appreciate you sharing the link to the press conference—I’ll definitely take a look.
Regarding the video, I’m somewhat familiar with that channel. I’ve seen similar content, and it seems to depict the technology being used quite accurately. I shared it with a friend in the military, and they felt the same. When it comes to what’s truly happening on the ground, only those who are there—whether soldiers, military personnel, war journalists, or the people living in the region—can fully understand the reality. However, the footage does offer insight into how advanced tools, such as drones and Leopard tanks, are being used to great effect in this conflict.
Thank you again for your input and for always bringing such valuable perspectives to the discussion. Your engagement is truly appreciated. May God bless your day as well! 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for your feedback on the combat video. I appreciate that you shared it with your friend in the military to get his take on it.
Thank you for your reply and I always appreciate the news you share with your readers. It’s obvious to me that you have put a great deal of time and effort into your posts.
Thank you for your kind words and I hope you have a great evening.
You’re very welcome, Chris! And thanks again, I hope you have a great evening as well. 😎
