The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office have announced the arrest of two Massachusetts men accused of detonating a large commercial firework inside a Harvard Medical School laboratory early on November 1, 2025 — a reckless act that triggered a fire alarm, caused property damage, and prompted an immediate federal response.
According to charging documents, Logan David Patterson, 18, of Plymouth, and Dominick Frank Cardoza, 20, of Bourne, were charged with conspiracy to damage a building by means of an explosive after allegedly breaking into the Goldenson Building, which houses Harvard’s Department of Neurobiology. Both were arrested Tuesday morning and appeared in federal court in Boston later that day.
Reconstructed Timeline of Events
Federal investigators say surveillance footage captured the two suspects walking toward the Harvard campus shortly after 2:20 a.m., wearing dark clothing and face coverings. Moments later, they were seen igniting what appeared to be roman candle-style fireworks on Huntington Avenue before scaling a construction fence and climbing scaffolding to access the roof of the Goldenson Building.
At approximately 2:45 a.m., a sudden explosion inside the building triggered fire alarms and sent campus police racing to the scene. The blast reportedly originated from a wooden locker in a fourth-floor laboratory, where researchers had been conducting experiments related to neurobiology.
The suspects were later seen moving between the fourth and fifth floors before fleeing the scene through a ground-level emergency exit.
Shortly afterward, cameras around the nearby Wentworth Institute of Technology and Massachusetts College of Art and Design campuses captured the two men wandering the area — one of them discarding clothing and the other attempting to enter student housing buildings. Investigators say the pair had been visiting friends at Wentworth for Halloween parties before the incident occurred.
Authorities confirmed that analysis of the recovered explosive residue remains ongoing, though early findings indicate a commercial-grade firework capable of causing serious injury or structural damage was used.
Federal and Local Response
The incident triggered a coordinated investigation involving the FBI Boston Division, the Harvard University Police Department, and the Massachusetts State Police, with additional assistance from local departments in Boston, Bourne, and Plymouth.
U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley called the act “an extraordinary breach of safety and judgment” and emphasized that “such reckless use of explosive devices on an academic campus will be met with decisive federal prosecution.”
FBI Special Agent in Charge Ted E. Docks stated that even though no one was injured, the potential for disaster was substantial:
“When you bring an explosive into a research environment, you risk not only lives but years of critical scientific work. The outcome could have been catastrophic.”
Legal Ramifications
If convicted, Patterson and Cardoza each face up to five years in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David M. Holcomb of the National Security Unit.
Officials stressed that the investigation is still active and that the third individual seen accompanying the suspects is being sought for questioning.
TRJ Verdict
The Harvard explosion marks another troubling example of how impulsive acts of recklessness are being treated with the same seriousness as deliberate attacks — and rightfully so. A moment of thrill-seeking nearly crossed into an act of domestic endangerment.
In an age where universities must now defend against both cyber and physical intrusions, the line between mischief and terrorism continues to blur.
What began as Halloween chaos ended as a federal explosives case — proof that in today’s world, even one spark can become a matter of national security.
