A Shiprock, New Mexico woman has pleaded guilty in federal court to voluntary manslaughter in the killing of her 7-year-old daughter, bringing a criminal case rooted in substance abuse, domestic violence, and tribal–federal jurisdiction to a close at the plea stage.
Maylene John, 35, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation at the time of the offense, entered her guilty plea in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico. The crime occurred on October 24, 2022, within Indian Country, placing the investigation and prosecution under federal authority.
According to court records, John fatally stabbed her daughter, causing a wound to the heart. Investigators determined that John was under the influence of methamphetamine during the incident. The child died as a result of the injuries.
Federal Jurisdiction and Charges
Because the offense occurred in Indian Country and involved a Native American defendant and victim, the case fell under federal jurisdiction, with prosecution handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico.
John pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, a charge that reflects the absence of premeditation while acknowledging criminal responsibility for the killing. Under federal statute, she faces up to 15 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Final sentencing will be determined by the court after consideration of statutory factors and a presentence investigation.
Investigation and Law Enforcement Coordination
The case was investigated by the Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office, with critical assistance from the Navajo Police Department and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations. The joint response reflects the layered enforcement structure used in serious violent crimes occurring on tribal land, where tribal, federal, and investigative authorities operate in coordination.
The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Caitlin L. Dillon and Eliot Neal.
Federal officials emphasized the seriousness of the offense and the importance of accountability in cases involving violence against children, particularly where substance abuse plays a central role.
Broader Context
Cases of violent crime in Indian Country often intersect with longstanding challenges involving substance abuse, access to mental health treatment, and domestic instability. Methamphetamine abuse remains a persistent driver of violent incidents across rural and tribal communities, straining local resources and elevating the risk of catastrophic outcomes inside the home.
Federal prosecution in such cases serves both a legal and deterrent function, particularly where crimes exceed the sentencing authority available to tribal courts alone.
TRJ Assessment
This case underscores the devastating consequences of drug-fueled violence within the home and the unique jurisdictional framework governing serious crimes in Indian Country. The federal plea reflects a balance between legal classification and accountability, while the investigation highlights the necessity of tribal–federal cooperation in addressing violent offenses involving vulnerable victims.
The loss of a child remains the most severe outcome any criminal case can involve. Sentencing will determine the final legal resolution, but the broader implications — substance abuse, family violence, and community trauma — extend far beyond the courtroom.
