South Korea’s largest online retailer is now at the center of one of the most unusual insider data breach investigations to emerge in recent years, after company officials confirmed the recovery of a destroyed laptop that had allegedly been weighted with bricks and thrown into a river in an attempt to eliminate digital evidence.
The incident stems from an internal data breach involving a former employee accused of accessing tens of millions of customer accounts. The company disclosed that during the course of the investigation, a canvas bag containing a smashed laptop was located and retrieved from a nearby river by a professional diving team. The device had reportedly been deliberately damaged and submerged in fresh water, a move investigators believe was intended to permanently destroy stored data and obstruct forensic recovery.
The breach itself was publicly acknowledged in November, when the company revealed that personal information tied to approximately 33.7 million customer accounts had been accessed by the former employee. The disclosure triggered widespread public backlash, political scrutiny, and questions about internal security controls at one of the country’s most dominant digital commerce platforms.
In a statement issued over the holiday period, the company sought to push back against claims that it had mishandled the response or conducted an internal investigation without oversight. Company officials asserted that all actions were taken under direct government direction and that authorities were informed and involved throughout the process. The company also accused certain officials and public figures of mischaracterizing its role, describing allegations of negligence as inaccurate and damaging.
As part of its response, the company announced a massive compensation program valued at 1.685 trillion won, roughly equivalent to 1.18 billion U.S. dollars, offering vouchers to affected users. While framed as an acknowledgment of responsibility, the compensation plan immediately drew criticism for limiting redemptions to the company’s own services, raising concerns that consumer restitution was being converted into platform-locked spending.
Leadership changes followed quickly. The company’s interim chief executive publicly expressed regret over the incident, stating that the breach caused significant distress to customers and that the organization fully acknowledged its responsibility. The appointment came after the previous chief executive stepped down amid mounting pressure as details of the breach continued to emerge.
From an investigative standpoint, the company revealed rare insight into the forensic process. Using what it described as digital fingerprinting techniques and internal access logs, investigators identified the former employee responsible for the unauthorized access. The individual reportedly admitted to the activity and provided details regarding how customer data was accessed within internal systems.
Authorities granted approval for direct contact with the suspect, after which investigators recovered desktop computers and external storage devices. Further questioning led to the identification of an additional laptop, later confirmed to be the one recovered from the river. Despite extensive physical damage and prolonged submersion, forensic specialists were reportedly able to stabilize the device long enough to document its contents before it was transferred to government custody.
The forensic review concluded that while the individual accessed roughly 33 million accounts, data from only about 3,000 users was actually retained. That data was reportedly deleted after media coverage of the breach surfaced. Investigators stated that there is currently no evidence the information was sold or distributed, though authorities have not ruled out further findings as the investigation remains ongoing.
The case highlights a growing concern within large digital platforms: insider threat exposure. Unlike external cyberattacks, insider breaches exploit legitimate system access, often leaving fewer immediate indicators and allowing actors to operate undetected for extended periods. The deliberate attempt to destroy physical hardware in this case underscores the lengths to which insiders may go once exposure becomes imminent.
Financial markets reacted swiftly following the company’s update, with shares rising after tentative confirmation that the scope of retained data was limited. Still, legal and regulatory risks remain unresolved. Lawmakers continue to scrutinize the company’s data protection practices, and a class action lawsuit in the United States remains pending, posing potential long-term financial and reputational consequences.
Beyond the immediate fallout, the case may serve as a watershed moment for how large consumer platforms in South Korea and abroad handle internal access controls, forensic readiness, and post-incident transparency. The recovery of a deliberately destroyed device from a river is not just an investigative anomaly — it is a stark reminder that digital breaches increasingly cross into physical efforts to erase accountability.
Whether the company’s response ultimately satisfies regulators and customers remains uncertain. What is clear is that this incident has exposed structural vulnerabilities that extend beyond a single employee, raising broader questions about insider risk, evidence preservation, and trust in platforms that hold vast amounts of personal data.
