We didn’t notice when it started to feel wrong,
just slower days that somehow felt too long,
a world still turning, loudly carrying on,
while something quiet in us all was gone.
There was no moment marked, no warning sign,
no clear before, no sharply drawn decline,
just less belief tucked into every line,
and less of us each time we crossed the line.
We learned to speak in ways that wouldn’t bruise,
to soften truths so they’d be easier to use,
to wear our silence like a pair of shoes
that never fit, but still we couldn’t lose.
We stayed polite. We stayed in our lanes.
We normalized the weight. We renamed the pain.
We called it growth, we called it change,
and slowly let the world rearrange.
Not into something cruel — just cold,
a place where hearts grew practical, not bold,
where wonder aged and quickly learned to fold,
and hope was treated like a thing outgrown.
We used to ask what any of this meant.
Now meaning feels like something overspent.
Everything counts, but nothing’s significant,
and even grief must now be efficient.
We scroll past wars like weather on a screen,
past faces blurred by things they shouldn’t mean,
we feel it all — just not enough to scream,
exhausted by the scale of what we’ve seen.
There was a time when kindness felt like truth,
not weakness dressed in sentimental youth.
Now mercy needs a reason to be used,
and empathy must first be “approved.”
We don’t say this out loud, but still we know:
the future isn’t where we’re meant to go.
It feels reduced, pre-owned, and overgrown
with rules that don’t remember how we were shown.
We still wake up. We still do what we must.
We still pretend tomorrow’s built on trust.
But something in us quietly adjusts
to lowered hopes and thinner forms of “us.”
We miss a world that wasn’t perfect, no—
just one where breathing didn’t feel like debt we owed,
where being human didn’t need to show
its worth in metrics no one could outgrow.
And maybe that’s the grief we never named:
not death, not loss, not someone gone away,
but living on while feeling out of frame,
as if we missed that moment meant to stay.
This isn’t what we thought we were becoming.
Yet here we are. Still caring. Still aware.
Still feeling something heavy in the air.
Still hoping, even knowing it’s unfair,
that meaning hasn’t left — it’s just not there.
And if you feel this too, that quiet ache,
this sense the world has asked you what you’ll take,
instead of what you’re willing still to make,
then know you’re not alone in what will break.
We are the ones who noticed something died,
not loudly, not with anyone beside—
just softly, while we were still alive,
learning how to live with what survived.

Thank you for this very thoughtful piece, John. It seems to be speaking of many things I have experienced.
I can relate to it.
Thank you again!
You’re very welcome, Chris. Thank you for reading it so closely. I’m grateful it resonated with your own experiences. That sense of recognition — of something quiet but enduring — is exactly what I hoped would come through. I appreciate you taking the time to share that. I hope you have a great night and a great day ahead. 😎
