Federal prosecutors have secured a life sentence against Ryan Wesley Routh, concluding one of the most serious domestic security prosecutions in modern U.S. history — an attempted assassination targeting President Donald J. Trump that unfolded in open public space and came within moments of catastrophic consequence.
On Wednesday, February 4, 2026, U.S. District Judge Aileen M. Cannon of the Southern District of Florida sentenced Routh, 59, to life imprisonment plus an additional 84 months, following a federal jury’s conviction on all five counts charged in the indictment. The sentence ensures Routh will never be released from federal custody.
The case arose from a September 2025 assassination attempt while President Trump was present at Trump International Golf Club in Florida. Trial evidence established that Routh engaged in deliberate surveillance, weapons acquisition, and tactical positioning consistent with a premeditated sniper-style attack against a protected individual.
According to sworn testimony, U.S. Secret Service Special Agent Robert Fercano, assigned to advance protective duty, was patrolling one hole ahead of President Trump when he observed Routh concealed along a fence line bordering the golf course. Routh was aiming what appeared to be a rifle directly toward the agent’s position and the area President Trump was approaching.
Fearing an imminent lethal threat to both himself and the President, Special Agent Fercano fired his service weapon. Routh immediately fled the scene, abandoning his firing position. Law enforcement officers later recovered a Norinco SKS rifle equipped with a scope, a loaded magazine containing 19 rounds, an additional round chambered, steel body armor plates, and a camera mounted to the fence, aimed at the sixth green where President Trump was scheduled to play moments later.
A civilian witness observed Routh running from the area and entering a black Nissan Xterra. That information was relayed to authorities, enabling officers from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, to intercept and arrest Routh while he was traveling northbound on Interstate 95.
A subsequent search of Routh’s vehicle uncovered multiple mobile phones, written materials, and documentation reflecting international flight planning, including directions to Miami International Airport. Cellular analysis presented at trial showed that between August 18 and September 15, 2024, Routh’s phone repeatedly connected to cell towers servicing Trump International Golf Club and the President’s private residence at Mar-a-Lago, establishing a pattern of surveillance activity months in advance.
Additional testimony revealed that Routh had previously left a box at a witness’s residence after an earlier visit to the area. Inside was a handwritten letter addressed “Dear World,” in which Routh explicitly acknowledged the attack, writing in part: “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I am so sorry I failed you.” Prosecutors argued the letter demonstrated intent, awareness, and ideological fixation, eliminating any ambiguity regarding motive or purpose.
Routh was convicted of attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, assault of a federal law enforcement officer, and multiple firearms offenses, each carrying severe statutory penalties. The additional 84-month sentence reflects mandatory enhancements tied to weapons and officer assault convictions, stacked consecutively under federal law.
The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with extensive support from the U.S. Secret Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office, and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators traced leads nationwide and internationally, employing FBI Laboratory analysis, digital forensics, cellular location mapping, and counterterrorism methodologies.
Federal officials emphasized that the case represents a clear example of political violence intersecting with premeditated lone-actor tactics, underscoring the evolving threat landscape facing national leaders. The successful interdiction, they noted, was the result of layered protective measures, rapid threat recognition, and decisive action under extreme time pressure.
With sentencing now complete, federal authorities stated that the life term reflects both punishment and incapacitation, ensuring the defendant can never again threaten public safety or the constitutional order. The case stands as a stark reminder of the real-world consequences of political violence — and of the narrow margins that often separate prevention from tragedy.

Thank you for this article. I heard of this attempt but never read many details associated with it.
It’s a good thing that U.S. Secret Service Special Agent Robert Fercano spotted Routh concealed along the fence line. The picture shared here looks like he had a secluded position.
I saw this on the evening news but I appreciate the detail in your report compared to the one I heard.
Thank you for your articles today, John. I hope you sleep well tonight and that you have a good day tomorrow! 🙂
You’re very welcome, Chris. I appreciate you taking the time to read through the details. That moment you pointed out — when Special Agent Fercano noticed Routh concealed along the fence line — really underscores how close this came to becoming something far worse. Situations like that hinge on seconds and awareness, and the outcome could have been very different.
I’m glad the added context was helpful. These cases often get condensed down to headlines, but the details matter when understanding just how serious and deliberate the threat was.
Thank you for reading and for your kind words today, Chris. I hope you have a restful night as well, and a good day tomorrow. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for this reply. Context is certainly something you don’t get from the headlines or the short soundbites. Your article and that picture show how close this really was. The detailed planning this guy did makes the sentence fit the crime. It sounds like this guy had other possible opportunities but that he was trying to make sure he got the “job done right.” Ugh!
I did have a restful night, thanks, and I appreciate your kind words. I hope you have a great day as well! 🙂
