Federal authorities have charged a Binghamton, New York man after investigators say he posted multiple threats online targeting the President of the United States, federal immigration agents, and individuals identified as political supporters of the president.
Jeffrey Scott Hamm, Jr., 32, of Binghamton, made his initial appearance in federal court in late February following the filing of a criminal complaint accusing him of using interstate communications to issue threats of violence. Federal prosecutors allege the threats were posted on YouTube during several occasions in January 2026.
The case was announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albany Division.
According to court documents, investigators identified multiple online comments allegedly posted by Hamm that contained threats directed toward President Donald Trump, unnamed Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, and other individuals described in the posts as supporters of the president.
Federal law prohibits transmitting threats to harm the President, federal officials, or other individuals through interstate communications systems, including internet platforms and electronic messaging services. Investigators say the alleged posts fell within the scope of those federal statutes because they were transmitted through online platforms accessible across state lines.
Authorities did not release the exact wording of the threats in public statements but indicated that the comments contained language interpreted as threats of violence.
Threat investigations involving public officials are frequently handled by federal law enforcement agencies because of the potential implications for national security and the protection of government personnel. Online platforms have increasingly become a focal point for such investigations as social media and video-sharing sites are widely used to publish comments that can be viewed nationwide.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI’s Albany Division, which operates Joint Terrorism Task Force units responsible for identifying threats involving terrorism, violence against government officials, and other national security concerns.
Following the investigation, Hamm was taken into custody and brought before United States Magistrate Judge Miroslav Lovric in federal court in Binghamton. The judge ordered that he remain detained pending further court proceedings.
Federal prosecutors indicated that the charge filed in the criminal complaint carries a potential penalty of up to five years in federal prison if the defendant is convicted. The charge may also include financial penalties of up to $250,000 as well as a term of supervised release following any prison sentence.
In federal criminal cases, the final sentence is determined by a judge after considering the statutory penalties associated with the offense, the federal sentencing guidelines, and factors related to the defendant’s criminal history and the circumstances surrounding the alleged conduct.
Authorities emphasized that the complaint filed against Hamm represents allegations at this stage of the legal process and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in federal court.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Stephen C. Green.
Investigators say the case reflects the continued focus of federal law enforcement agencies on monitoring and responding to threats made through online platforms. As communication technologies have expanded, investigators have increasingly relied on digital evidence and online activity records when identifying individuals suspected of making threats through internet-based communication systems.
Officials involved in the case stated that federal authorities will continue investigating online threats directed at public officials and law enforcement personnel as part of broader efforts to address potential violence linked to online activity.
The investigation remains ongoing.
