FBI Confirms Identity and Timeline in West Bloomfield Temple Attack; Armed Assailant Dead After Vehicle Breach and Gunfire Exchange

Federal authorities have confirmed the identity of the individual responsible for the West Bloomfield temple attack as 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, following a rapid-response investigation led by the FBI Detroit Field Office.

The attack targeted Temple Israel and unfolded over a tightly defined timeline that began with prolonged staging and ended in an armed confrontation inside the building. According to federal confirmation, Ghazali had no prior criminal history, possessed registered weapons, and had not previously been the subject of an FBI investigation.

Investigators have established that Ghazali arrived at the location at approximately 9:58 a.m. in a gray Ford F-150 and remained parked in the lot for more than two hours without interacting with other individuals or vehicles. This stationary period is being treated as a deliberate staging phase prior to execution.

At approximately 12:15 p.m., Ghazali began moving through the parking area before accelerating toward the structure. At 12:19 p.m., he drove the vehicle directly into Door 5 on the southeast side of the building, striking a security guard during entry. The forced breach created immediate interior access and initiated the active phase of the attack.

Moments later, the vehicle became lodged within an interior corridor, immobilizing Ghazali inside the structure. At approximately 12:20 p.m., he began firing from within the vehicle through the windshield. A security officer engaged him from behind the vehicle, initiating a gunfight through the rear window. A second armed security officer entered the engagement from the front of the vehicle at approximately 12:22 p.m., creating a two-angle defensive response that contained the threat within the confined space.

By approximately 12:31 p.m., the vehicle’s engine compartment ignited. During the exchange, Ghazali sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, ending the attack sequence. The fire consumed portions of the vehicle and materials stored within it.

Search of the truck revealed a large quantity of commercial-grade fireworks and multiple containers filled with a flammable liquid consistent with gasoline. The presence of these materials indicates the potential for a secondary escalation beyond the initial vehicle breach and firearm engagement, expanding the intended impact of the attack.

Federal investigators continue to process evidence recovered from the temple, the vehicle, and surrounding areas. At this stage of the investigation, no confirmed link has been established between this incident and the separate shooting at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Authorities have also stated there are no additional known threats to the surrounding community.

The response inside the facility was immediate and decisive. Armed security personnel engaged the attacker within minutes of the breach, preventing further movement beyond the initial impact zone. Simultaneously, staff executed evacuation procedures, successfully removing children and occupants from the building during the active threat window.

A Family Assistance Center has been established at the Jewish Community Center in Detroit to support individuals affected by the attack, including access to victim specialists and recovery of personal belongings left behind during the evacuation.

The investigation remains active, with federal authorities prioritizing verified evidence and resisting premature conclusions regarding motive. Digital and physical evidence collection is ongoing, and the FBI continues to request information from the public related to the subject’s actions and behavior leading up to the incident.
