• Professional targeting of industry personnel generated 107 complaints tied to non-delivery, advance fee, and overpayment fraud, resulting in losses totaling more than $777,000. • Extortion operations were reported in 64 complaints involving threats tied to unreleased music, personal data exposure, or explicit material. Victims included artists, producers, and label personnel.
• Consumer-facing fraud resulted in 61 complaints related to ticketing, merchandise, and meet-and-greet scams, with losses exceeding $325,000.
• Data breach incidents were documented in 55 complaints, where attackers gained unauthorized access to devices or social media platforms to extract unreleased music or hijack promotional channels.

Investigative findings indicate that cybercriminals are increasingly targeting high-value digital assets within the music industry, including unreleased tracks, licensing rights, and monetization channels. Unauthorized access to artist accounts and production systems enables attackers to both steal intellectual property and leverage it for extortion or resale.

One emerging vector involves the use of artificial intelligence to generate music content combined with automated streaming activity. These operations are designed to manipulate royalty distribution systems on streaming platforms by artificially inflating engagement metrics. This introduces a financial exploitation layer that blends content generation with automated fraud infrastructure.

Another identified threat involves insider risk. In at least one case, a former sound engineer allegedly copied unreleased material during employment and later sold it through online channels. This reflects a broader vulnerability within production pipelines where access to pre-release content can be exploited for financial gain.

The convergence of these tactics demonstrates a shift from isolated fraud incidents to coordinated exploitation of the music industry’s digital ecosystem. Attackers are targeting not only individuals but the infrastructure that supports content creation, distribution, and monetization.

The advisory also highlights the role of public networks and phishing-based access attempts in facilitating account compromise. Unauthorized access events often originate from deceptive communications that mimic legitimate business interactions, including contract offers, collaboration requests, and financial transactions.

Authorities are directing victims to report incidents through the Internet Crime Complaint Center to support ongoing investigations and threat mapping. Reporting includes submission of communication records, transaction data, and identifying details related to suspected actors.
