A coordinated enforcement effort in Dayton, Ohio has resulted in a series of federal firearms cases targeting individuals accused of illegal possession, violent offenses, and narcotics-linked weapon activity. The cases form part of an ongoing downtown violence reduction initiative designed to shift repeat firearm offenders into the federal system, where sentencing exposure and prosecutorial thresholds are significantly higher.
Federal authorities announced eight separate cases involving multiple defendants, each tied to violations ranging from felon-in-possession charges to attempted murder of federal agents, machinegun possession, and firearm use during drug trafficking operations. The initiative reflects a structured escalation strategy—identifying high-risk offenders through local policing operations and transferring qualifying cases into federal jurisdiction.
JaMichael Craver was charged on March 30 with being a felon in possession of a firearm following an attempted flight from law enforcement during a coordinated operation involving the Dayton Police Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Craver was apprehended after a foot pursuit and allegedly found in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun. At the time of arrest, he was a fugitive with multiple active warrants, including charges tied to drug trafficking and weapons restrictions. His prior convictions include aggravated robbery and kidnapping.
Terrence Gay faces multiple federal charges including attempted murder of federal agents, assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, and felon in possession of a firearm. Gay, a fugitive linked to a prior drug trafficking conviction, allegedly opened fire on members of a federal fugitive apprehension team during an attempted arrest at a Dayton residence. Law enforcement recovered multiple firearms at the scene following his apprehension.
Johnny Ray Perkins and Elisah Lobbley were indicted on March 10 in connection with drug trafficking activity near the downtown RTA transit hub. Perkins is additionally charged with possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking and unlawful possession as a convicted felon, indicating an armed distribution model operating within a high-traffic public zone.
Anton Hurston was indicted following a February traffic stop in Dayton’s central business district, where he was allegedly found in possession of a firearm equipped with a high-capacity magazine. The charge reflects an increasing enforcement focus on enhanced-capacity weapon configurations within urban environments.
Rondell Coleman faces charges for possession of a machinegun and possession of a stolen firearm. According to allegations, Coleman was encountered by responding officers during a domestic violence incident while carrying the weapon concealed on his person. The presence of a machinegun in a civilian setting represents a significant escalation in weapon lethality and enforcement priority.
Dylan Hiner pleaded guilty on February 4 to illegally shipping, transporting, and receiving ammunition while under felony indictment. The case stems from repeated firearm discharges near the University of Dayton campus while Hiner was already facing state-level weapons charges, indicating continued access to ammunition despite active legal restrictions.
Colby Smith was indicted on January 13 on charges of kidnapping, carjacking, and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. The charges relate to an incident in which victims were targeted during routine travel, with firearms used to forcibly seize vehicles and personal property.
Jacquan Sims, Miyauhn Vineyard, Raheem Goff, and Joshua Haggins were indicted in December for conspiracy to distribute more than 400 grams of fentanyl, alongside firearm possession in furtherance of drug trafficking. Law enforcement seized multiple weapons in connection with the case, including a machinegun, reinforcing the intersection between narcotics distribution and heavily armed enforcement structures.
The cases were developed through joint operations involving local law enforcement and federal agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the U.S. Marshals Service. The enforcement model emphasizes rapid identification of repeat offenders, coordinated arrest operations, and federal prosecution pathways designed to impose longer-term incapacitation.
Federal firearms violations carry substantial penalties depending on the offense. Felon-in-possession charges can result in up to 15 years of imprisonment. Machinegun possession and unregistered firearm violations carry up to 10 years. Firearm use in drug trafficking or violent crimes introduces mandatory minimum sentences ranging from five to ten years, with additional enhancements for brandishing or discharging a weapon.
The Dayton initiative reflects a broader enforcement approach where local incidents are evaluated for federal escalation potential, particularly in cases involving repeat offenders, high-risk weapon types, or violence against law enforcement. This model increases prosecutorial leverage and extends sentencing exposure beyond state-level frameworks.
All charges remain allegations, and each defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty through the judicial process.
