SpaceX’s Starlink Mission:
SpaceX is set to make history today with the launch of its Falcon 9 rocket on the Starlink 6-51 mission from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A. This marks the 81st flight of a Falcon rocket, inching closer to the 82 total shuttle flights from this historic launch pad. The Falcon 9 first stage booster, tail number B1077, will be launching for the 12th time, having previously supported significant missions such as the Crew-5 flight for NASA’s Commercial Crew Program and the NG-20 mission to the ISS. Approximately 8.5 minutes after liftoff, B1077 is expected to touchdown on the SpaceX droneship, ‘Just Read the Instructions,’ marking the 78th booster landing for JRTI and the 298th landing for SpaceX. The payload includes 23 Starlink satellites, which will join the 5,809 already in orbit, further expanding SpaceX’s Starlink constellation.
China’s Space Endeavors:
The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) has announced that the Shenzhou-18 crewed spaceship and a Long March-2F carrier rocket have been moved to the launching area. This step is part of China’s ongoing efforts to maintain a presence in low Earth orbit and continue its scientific and technological advancements in space exploration.
Apollo 13 Anniversary:
Today also commemorates the Apollo 13 mission’s safe return to Earth after a perilous journey in 1970. The mission, which was intended to land on the Moon, was aborted after an oxygen tank burst, but the crew managed to navigate back to Earth, splashing down safely in the South Pacific Ocean.
Upcoming Solar Eclipse:
In other news, anticipation is building for the 2024 total solar eclipse, which is expected to be a particularly significant event due to the moon’s proximity to Earth during its orbit in April. This will result in an especially dark eclipse that will last for nearly 4½ minutes for those within the path of totality.
NASA’s Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) Announcement:
NASA is preparing to host a news conference to announce the company or companies selected to develop the Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV), which will aid Artemis astronauts in exploring more of the Moon’s surface on future missions.
SpaceX’s Rapid Launch Cadence:
SpaceX continues its rapid pace with another three Falcon 9 flights planned for this week, including two launches on April 17th from both the east and west coasts, and another on April 18th. This follows the recent achievement of the first 20th launch and landing of a booster with B1062 during the Starlink 6-49 mission. SpaceX has already launched 564 Starlink satellites so far in 2024 and aims to reach a total of 148 flights this year.
Chang Zheng 2D Launch:
A Chang Zheng 2D (CZ-2D) launched from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in China on April 15th, carrying an Earth observation satellite to orbit. This was the third flight of the CZ-2D vehicle this year, continuing China’s active launch schedule.
