New Weather Threats
The U.S. climate outlook for June 2024 suggests much warmer than average temperatures across much of the western and central U.S. and Florida. High chances for a wetter than average June exist across a small area of the Pacific Northwest. Areas of the Southern Plains and Southeast have elevated odds for a wetter than average June. A heat dome is causing temperatures to reach into the triple digits for major cities such as Las Vegas, Phoenix, Redding, California, and Cedar City, Utah. This heat wave has been killing hundreds of people in Mexico over the past several weeks.
Tornado Watches
Tens of millions of people along a 1,300-mile stretch from the Gulf Coast to the U.S.-Canada border in Minnesota are at risk of severe weather. The main threats being large hail, damaging wind gusts, and torrential rain that could lead to flash flooding.
Hurricanes
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released its 2024 Atlantic hurricane season forecast. It predicts an 85% chance of an above-normal season. NOAA is forecasting a range of 17 to 25 total named storms.
Earthquakes
A magnitude-4.2 offshore earthquake occurred near northwestern California, US, at around 09:26 on June 7.
State-by-State Weather Threats
In Alabama, there could be some dangerous severe weather today as storms sweep across the Central Plains. Damaging wind and hail are the main threats, but tornadoes are also possible. The weather in Juneau, Alaska, is expected to have daily high temperatures ranging from 59°F to 65°F with daily precipitation risks varying from 8% to 37%. Record-breaking heat continues to bake Arizona after many locations saw their hottest May on record, and now a flood threat is adding insult to injury as tropical downpours are expected to move into the state at the start of the new workweek.
