The U.S. State Department has announced a $1 million reward for information leading to the capture of Tim Vakhaevich Stigal, a Russian hacker involved in several major cyber intrusions against American targets. The reward is being offered through the department’s Rewards for Justice program, aimed at locating individuals responsible for significant cybercrimes.
Stigal, charged by the Justice Department earlier this year, is accused of participating in four separate conspiracies to traffic in stolen payment card information between 2014 and 2016. The victims of these cybercrimes include at least three corporate entities. He faces charges of wire fraud conspiracy, wire fraud, computer fraud extortion, access device fraud, and aggravated identity theft. His activities have earned him a place on the U.S. Secret Service’s Most Wanted Fugitive list.
The reward announcement coincides with recent efforts by the U.S. government to combat Russian-linked influence campaigns, including disinformation efforts targeting the American public ahead of the presidential election. The State Department also pledged to target the operations of Rossiya Segodnya, the parent company of Russian state broadcaster Russia Today (RT), by implementing new visa restrictions on the firm’s subsidiaries.
Additionally, the U.S. government has put forth a $10 million reward for information related to individuals involved with RaHDit, a Russian hacking group connected to RT.
