In the wake of increasing concerns over the security of American data, House Republicans are now pushing for an investigation into the Chinese e-commerce platform Temu, echoing their earlier scrutiny of TikTok. In a letter to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the FBI, members of the Select Committee on Intelligence requested further information about Temu and its parent company, Pinduoduo (PDD), amid allegations of data exploitation and ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
The committee expressed deep concern about the potential misuse of American citizens’ personal and economic data. Drawing parallels to the ongoing investigation into TikTok, they emphasized that the U.S. must understand the relationship between Temu, the CCP, and China’s national security laws.
“Much like the case with TikTok, the connection between the Chinese Communist Party and Americans’ data must be addressed,” the committee stated, noting their worries that the CCP might once again be leveraging the U.S.’s free market and democratic principles to gain access to sensitive data.
Since its launch in the U.S. in 2022, Temu has rapidly expanded, bolstered by high-profile Super Bowl ads in both 2023 and 2024. The platform has allowed Chinese manufacturers to sell directly to American consumers at low prices, sparking concerns over issues like forced labor, unfair price controls, and the rapid spread of “fast fashion” trends. Pinduoduo, the parent company of Temu, was even suspended from Google’s app store last year after researchers discovered malware exploiting vulnerabilities to collect user data.
These data security concerns have only deepened in recent months. In February, several U.S. citizens filed lawsuits against Temu over its data collection practices, citing privacy violations. The House committee’s letter also referenced reports from Ars Technica that linked Temu’s executives and PDD to the CCP, intensifying suspicions.
With PDD listed on NASDAQ, the committee urged the SEC and FBI to collaborate on a comprehensive investigation. They specifically asked whether the FBI had shared intelligence with the SEC regarding the security vulnerabilities associated with Temu, as well as whether the agencies regularly work together on similar national security issues.
This investigation call is part of a larger congressional effort to address the dominance of Chinese companies in U.S. markets. Recently, Congress released a report claiming that China had embedded technological backdoors into ship-to-shore cranes, potentially allowing access to critical infrastructure.
As these security concerns escalate, President Joe Biden signed legislation in April 2024 that mandates TikTok’s sale or ban by January 2025, citing national security threats. TikTok, for its part, has sued to overturn the law.
The scrutiny surrounding Temu is just one example of the broader effort to address the potential risks posed by Chinese companies operating within the U.S. and the influence of the CCP on American consumer data.

We get Temu advertising in the UK too, and I won’t touch them. Good that they’re being investigated, their methods are questionable to say the least. 🤔
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! It’s interesting to hear that Temu’s reach extends to the UK as well. I completely agree—their methods definitely raise some red flags, and it’s good to see that they’re being investigated. Hopefully, more light will be shed on their practices soon. Appreciate you chiming in! 🤔😎
No problem. I despise the sheer greed of organisations like this. It’s everywhere, unfortunately. 🤨
I hear you, and I couldn’t agree more. It seems like greed is becoming more and more common these days, and it’s frustrating to see organizations operate this way.
I might have to post about the subject myself. 🤔
That would be great! 😎
Watch this space! 😂
I’ll definitely keep an eye out for it! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. 😎
