Elon Musk has branded himself as a champion of free speech, positioning X, formerly known as Twitter, as the ultimate haven for open dialogue and unfiltered expression. Yet, the reality of X’s operations reveals a starkly different narrative—one that prioritizes financial gain and platform growth over genuine commitment to the principles of free speech. By aligning with high-profile and polarizing figures like Donald Trump, Tucker Carlson, and Alex Jones, Musk has constructed an ecosystem where controversy equals currency. Meanwhile, grassroots voices, those advocating for constitutional rights and truth, find themselves increasingly marginalized.
The Business of Free Speech
Elon Musk has long marketed himself as a disruptor, someone unafraid to challenge the status quo and take on powerful institutions in the name of freedom. His acquisition of X was widely celebrated by those who believed he would restore the platform’s reputation as a space for genuine discourse. However, the cracks in this image are becoming increasingly evident. Musk’s vision of free speech is heavily intertwined with financial pragmatism, where only voices that serve the platform’s engagement metrics are amplified. Figures like Donald Trump, Tucker Carlson, and Alex Jones are not elevated for their ideological contributions but for the economic value they bring. Their controversies generate unparalleled traffic, subscriptions, and advertising revenue, making them invaluable assets to the platform.
This strategy, while effective from a business perspective, leaves little room for smaller, grassroots creators. These are individuals and organizations advocating for constitutional rights, transparency, and truth. Instead of being given the same platform, they face increasing censorship and algorithmic suppression. The message is clear: free speech on X is selective, reserved for those who can pay their way or attract mass audiences that boost the platform’s profitability. For the rest, freedom of expression remains a mirage.
Alex Jones and the Financial Equation
The inclusion of Alex Jones and Infowars in X’s ecosystem is one of the most glaring examples of this profit-driven approach. Jones, a controversial and divisive figure, has built a media empire through Infowars, attracting millions of followers who tune in for his polarizing narratives.
For Elon Musk, Jones represents more than just a voice—he represents a financial windfall. Infowars drives substantial revenue, drawing an audience that boosts X’s engagement metrics and monetization opportunities. By hosting Jones and similar figures, X capitalizes on the attention they bring, further intertwining the platform’s success with controversial, yet highly profitable, voices.
Musk’s legal team’s involvement in the bankruptcy proceedings of Infowars further underscores the financial motivations behind this partnership. By asserting X’s ownership rights over Infowars-related accounts, Musk is protecting a valuable asset. It’s not about ideology or solidarity with Jones; it’s about ensuring that X retains control over a monetizable audience. This dynamic creates an illusion for Jones and his followers, who may believe that Musk is aligning with their cause. The truth, however, is that Musk’s decisions are rooted in business logic, leveraging Jones as a tool to drive traffic and revenue.
Tucker Carlson and Trump: The Bigger Picture
Tucker Carlson’s move to X serves as another example of Musk’s calculated strategy. Carlson, a former Fox News anchor with a massive following, brings a loyal and engaged audience to the platform. His commentary, often provocative and polarizing, fits perfectly into X’s engagement-driven model. Like Jones, Carlson’s value lies in his ability to draw attention—both from supporters and critics alike.
The inclusion of Donald Trump further highlights Musk’s business-first mentality. Trump’s return to X following his suspension by previous ownership generated headlines worldwide, bringing millions of eyes back to the platform. These decisions are not about free speech or ideological alignment but about building a platform that thrives on controversy and polarization. Musk’s X is becoming a digital battleground, where figures like Trump and Carlson are used to fuel engagement, ensuring that the platform remains relevant and profitable in an increasingly competitive digital landscape.
The Silencing of Grassroots Truth-Tellers
While high-profile figures are elevated, grassroots truth-tellers—those who speak out for the Constitution, the Second Amendment, and transparent governance—are finding themselves increasingly silenced. These voices, often representing the core of free speech advocacy, do not bring the same level of financial benefit to the platform. As a result, they face algorithmic suppression, shadowbanning, and other forms of censorship that limit their reach.
This dynamic exposes a glaring hypocrisy in Musk’s approach. While X is marketed as a haven for free speech, it operates under a double standard where only profitable voices are truly free. The grassroots creators who built their followings on truth and authenticity are treated as disposable, their contributions overshadowed by the platform’s pursuit of profit. This reality undermines Musk’s claims and reveals the selective nature of X’s commitment to free expression.
A Business, Not Personal
It’s crucial to acknowledge that Musk’s decisions are not personal. They are business decisions driven by the need to sustain and grow X in an increasingly competitive social media environment. However, this does not absolve the consequences of those decisions. By prioritizing profit over principles, Musk is redefining the very concept of free speech, turning it into a tool for corporate gain.
For creators who stand for truth and constitutional values, this shift is particularly troubling. Their voices, which should be central to a platform claiming to champion free speech, are being marginalized. This critique is not about Musk as an individual but about the system he is perpetuating—a system where free speech is commodified, and the true essence of open dialogue is lost in the pursuit of profit.
Conclusion: The Mirage of Free Speech
Elon Musk’s portrayal of X as a free speech haven is ultimately a mirage. While the platform elevates figures like Trump, Carlson, and Jones, it simultaneously silences those who represent the core ideals of free speech. This duality reveals a platform driven by financial incentives rather than a genuine commitment to principles.
As long as profit remains the guiding force, the promise of free speech on X will remain unfulfilled. For those who stand for truth, constitutional values, and authentic dialogue, the fight against censorship continues. Musk’s actions serve as a stark reminder that the battle for free speech is far from over—and it extends even to platforms that claim to defend it.

This is a very educational post, John. I’ve never had a twitter account as I find it hard enough to keep up with the little digital footprint that I do have. But, it’s hard not to hear about things happening with X.
It’s a shame that profit is behind the most important decisions and that the promise of free speech on X is and will remain unfulfilled. As someone who thought (and heard more than once) that more freedom was going to be the result of Musk’s purchase, I’m disappointed.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment, Chris! I completely understand your perspective—keeping up with even a small digital footprint can be challenging. It’s unfortunate that profit often takes priority over promises like free speech, especially on platforms like X. Many, myself included, hoped Musk’s purchase would lead to more freedom, but it’s clear those expectations haven’t been met.
I’m glad I was able to share the results of my JS files from X—most people have no clue about all of that. It’s great to know I could help educate on that front. I truly appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts! I hope you have a great night. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for your reply and wishes for a great night.
I hope you have a great night as well!
