Richard Ehiemere, 21, a member of a shadowy “Com” network based in East London, was convicted Tuesday on charges of fraud and making indecent images of children.
The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) began investigating Ehiemere after chat platform Discord flagged suspicious activity in 2021, when he was just 17 years old. According to the NCA, Ehiemere was tied to a group called CVLT, a faction of “The Com,” a loosely organized online network known for spreading misogynistic content and engaging in a range of cyber offenses.
Unlike traditional cybercrime groups, Com networks operate independently, but some factions have been found collaborating with Russian ransomware gangs, as the FBI warned last year.
Authorities say CVLT members specifically targeted teenage girls on social media, using fake profiles to manipulate them into sending explicit images. Victims who complied were then blackmailed—threatened with “doxing,” a tactic where personal details are exposed online, to force them into even more degrading acts.
“CVLT victims would often be targeted by one member who coerced them into sending intimate images. That material would then be used by the wider group to blackmail the victim into sending increasingly extreme content,” the NCA revealed.
Investigators found that some victims were pressured into joining group calls where they were ordered to perform sexual acts and even self-harm on camera. In the worst cases, vulnerable victims were encouraged to take their own lives while being watched.
Ehiemere was linked to the crimes through an account under the alias #Retaliate#1337, which was used to leak stolen email addresses and passwords—commonly referred to as “combo lists”—to CVLT members. Law enforcement traced over 380 log-ins from this account back to Ehiemere’s residence, where he was arrested in April 2021.
A search of his devices uncovered 142 stolen credential lists, 29 indecent images of children, and messages discussing hacking, data trafficking, and methods to avoid detection.
Steve Laval, a lead investigator with the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit, described Ehiemere as a key player in the group’s activities.
“He was a key enabler for this harmful online group, providing stolen data that helped them defraud and exploit hundreds of victims,” Laval stated.
The NCA says it remains committed to cracking down on Com networks, working with tech companies to track these groups and warning parents and educators about the dangers of online predators.
Ehiemere’s conviction is a stark reminder that these online networks are real, dangerous, and actively exploiting vulnerable individuals.
