A massive cyberattack has compromised the personal data of every visitor to the Toronto Zoo between 2000 and April 2023, marking one of the most significant data breaches in the institution’s history.
What Was Stolen?
The Toronto Zoo released a statement this week confirming the January 2024 cyberattack, following an extensive forensic investigation into what data was accessed.
While officials have not disclosed the exact number of affected individuals, the zoo acknowledged that hackers copied transaction data containing information on all guests and members who purchased general admission tickets.
The stolen data includes:
- Names
- Addresses
- Phone numbers
- Email addresses
- Partial credit card details (last four digits and expiration dates for transactions between January 2022 and April 2023)
The stolen data was leaked on the dark web last year, but due to the method of publication, downloading it has reportedly been difficult. However, the zoo warned that this could change at any time.
Devastating Loss Beyond Visitor Data
The attack caused major operational disruptions, but the most significant collateral damage was the loss of decades’ worth of wildlife conservation research. Officials described the impact as “extremely challenging”, underscoring the long-term consequences of cybercrime beyond just stolen financial information.
Akira Ransomware Group Claims Responsibility
The Akira ransomware group has taken credit for the attack, claiming to have stolen 133 gigabytes of data, including:
- Confidential agreements
- Personal files
- Internal documents
After discovering the breach, the Toronto Zoo also notified affected employees, volunteers, and donors. All current and former staff dating back to 1989 likely had their personal information compromised and were offered credit monitoring services.
Investigation & Security Warnings
The Toronto Zoo has reported the incident to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, which has launched an investigation.
Zoo officials urge all affected individuals to remain vigilant, advising them to:
- Monitor financial account statements for suspicious activity
- Be cautious of phishing emails and potential fraud attempts
A Zoo Under Attack, A Global Wake-Up Call
With over 1.2 million visitors annually and a collection of 5,000+ animals, the Toronto Zoo is one of the most renowned wildlife institutions in the world. However, this cyberattack exposes a harsh reality—even conservation and educational organizations are prime targets for cybercriminals.
