So here we go—another way to silence voices they don’t agree with. Medium’s latest crackdown isn’t about stopping “spam” or “fraud”; it’s about tightening control over speech and filtering out writers who don’t align with their vision.
And don’t think this ends with Medium. Other platforms will follow suit, tweaking their rules and policies just enough to sidestep the new free speech protections signed into law by the Trump administration. This is a calculated move—one designed to preserve corporate control over narratives while pretending to clean up the platform.
Medium just made it clear: they are not a platform for free expression—they are a controlled ecosystem where only the approved voices get heard, and approved narratives get rewarded. This is corporate censorship at its finest, dressed up as “quality control.” They claim to be protecting readers, but in reality, they are:
- Banning AI-assisted content from the Partner Program, while using AI themselves to determine who gets paid.
- Policing engagement and calling organic audience-building “fraud.” If your community supports you too much, you could be flagged.
- Manually deciding who gets an Author Badge, limiting credibility for certain writers while elevating others.
These platforms that are censoring—Mastodon, Facebook, X, and others we haven’t mentioned—and now Medium—all have one goal: control. They want to decide who succeeds, who gets visibility, and who disappears.
And The Realist Juggernaut is a prime example of how these platforms selectively enforce their rules. Most of them aren’t even hiding it anymore—it’s becoming blatantly clear.
We’ve built something real—something people want to read. And because we don’t play by their rules, we’ve become the test case for what they can silence. They are making an example out of us, showing exactly what we can and cannot say.
Medium’s latest announcement, sent via the Daily Digest (one of their multiple blogs), should set off alarm bells for any writer who values free speech, independence, and fairness.
This isn’t just an update—it’s a warning.
Let’s break it down.
The Censorship Playbook: Medium’s Real Agenda
Medium claims they are cracking down on:
- Spammy comments and fake engagement
- AI-generated stories behind paywalls
- “Fraudulent activity” among Partner Program writers
Sounds reasonable at first, right? Until you realize these terms are so vague they could apply to anything they don’t want on their platform.
Their so-called fraud detection involves using AI to flag content that plausibly looks AI-generated. Translation: They’re using flawed, unproven AI tools to detect what they think is AI-generated content, and removing writers without actual proof.
Then, they admit they will rely on “curators” and “the Medium community” to determine what gets suppressed. That’s code for mob-driven censorship. If enough people think your content was AI-generated, or simply don’t like what you’re writing, they can get you flagged, demonetized, or banned.
Selective Enforcement: The Author Badge Problem
Here’s another red flag—Medium is quietly withholding the Author Badge from real, legitimate writers. This means even if you’re an established author, which we are, Medium can choose whether or not to acknowledge you as one. It’s not about credentials, experience, or the quality of your work—it’s about control.
We have applied three times already—denied the first time and met with absolute silence the last two times. No response. No explanation. Just ignored. That alone tells you everything you need to know about how this system really works—our voices don’t matter, only our money does.
Yes, we pay a membership fee every month to be on this platform, just like we do for some of the other platforms we are on. Yet, despite being paying members, Medium decides who gets recognition and who gets erased.
Why? Because they want to dictate visibility.
If they don’t like what you write, they don’t want readers seeing that blue “Author” badge next to your name. They don’t want their platform elevating voices that challenge the status quo or step outside their curated narrative. This isn’t just oversight—it’s deliberate suppression.
By stripping or refusing to grant the Author Badge, Medium is sending a message:
- Your words are not welcome here unless they align with our agenda.
- Your credibility is something we decide, not something you earn.
- Your reach and recognition are privileges, not rights.
This is manual censorship at its finest. They control who gets seen, who gets engagement, and who fades into obscurity. And let’s be clear—this isn’t just happening to small or unknown writers. It’s happening to those who built audiences, who earned recognition, and who dared to write without fear.
And that’s exactly why The Realist Juggernaut is in their crosshairs.
We don’t need their approval—we have the audience, we have the credibility, and we have the reach. And that makes us dangerous to their model. We are proof that writers can thrive without their gatekeeping.
This is just one more tool in their censorship arsenal. If they can’t ban you outright, they’ll erase your legitimacy instead.
But here’s the truth they don’t want to admit: Recognition doesn’t come from a blue badge. It comes from real readers, real engagement, and real influence. And The Realist Juggernaut isn’t going anywhere.
Fraudulent “Fraud Detection”
Medium boasts about suspending 1.7% of its Partner Program writers last month under the claim that they were engaged in “fraudulent activity.” Yet they also admit that their system is far from perfect and that they “lean on judgment” rather than clear, verifiable evidence.
This isn’t about stopping fraud—it’s about giving them the excuse to remove writers whenever they see fit.
And let’s talk about how they define fraud. According to Medium, you could be flagged if:
- You engage in “coordinated inauthentic engagement” (aka, if too many of your followers interact with your posts).
- You have multiple Medium accounts (regardless of whether you’ve done anything wrong).
- Your content reads like it was AI-generated—even if it’s 100% human-written.
The reality? This system is designed to punish independent writers, limit visibility for those who don’t fit the narrative, and discourage any form of community-driven success outside of Medium’s control.
The AI Detection Scam: Medium’s Biggest Blunder
Medium claims they can “plausibly determine” whether content is AI-generated. But let’s get real—they have no idea.
AI detection is one of the biggest frauds in content moderation today. Even the most advanced AI detection tools cannot reliably tell the difference between human-written and AI-assisted content. Studies have already shown that:
- AI detectors frequently mislabel human writing as AI-generated, especially when written by non-native English speakers or in a clear, structured style.
- There is no 100% accurate AI detection tool—none exist. Every tool out there has been tested and proven to fail in real-world applications.
- AI models evolve constantly, making detection even more unreliable. What worked yesterday doesn’t work today, and it definitely won’t work tomorrow.
Medium, of course, knows this. And yet, they’re still basing their entire crackdown on AI-generated content on flawed technology. If their system flags you? Too bad. Your content is “plausibly” AI-generated. No proof needed.
That’s like a cop pulling you over and saying, “You look like you were speeding. I don’t have proof, but I feel pretty sure you were.” That’s the level of logic we’re dealing with here.
And let’s not forget the most hilarious irony of all—they are using AI to detect AI. That’s right. The same technology they claim is “harmful” to writing is the very thing they are relying on to police the platform.
So let’s make this crystal clear:
- Medium is not fighting AI—it’s using AI to decide who gets banned.
- Medium is not protecting “human writing”—it’s just controlling who gets visibility.
- Medium’s AI detection is a joke, and they know it.
If they actually cared about quality, they’d judge content based on its value, not whether a flawed algorithm “thinks” it was AI-generated. But they don’t care about quality—they care about control.
And that’s why this isn’t about stopping AI—it’s about stopping us.
The Mastodon Connection: More of the Same Old Tactics
Medium’s push toward tighter censorship is no surprise, considering its connection to Mastodon—another platform that prides itself on “community moderation,” which in practice often means ideological policing.
Medium, like Mastodon, is now shifting toward a model where content control is not just about actual violations of rules but about selectively limiting reach, revenue, and recognition based on subjective “quality” metrics.
And we all know where that leads—silencing dissenting voices while rewarding those who fall in line.
Disability and AI: The Hypocrisy of Banning Assistive Tech
Medium’s stance on AI-generated content doesn’t just harm independent writers—it actively discriminates against authors with disabilities.
Let’s talk about Stephen Hawking, one of the most brilliant minds in history. He had ALS, which made it impossible for him to write or speak without AI-driven assistive technology. The words he spoke, the books he wrote, and the research he shared with the world were all facilitated by AI-powered communication tools.
So, by Medium’s logic:
- Would his books be considered “AI-generated” and unworthy of recognition?
- Would his insights suddenly be labeled “fraudulent” because they weren’t physically typed by his own hands?
- Would Medium have removed him from their Partner Program for “inauthentic writing”?
The truth is, AI isn’t just for automation or mass production—it’s also a lifeline for people who need it to communicate, write, and share their ideas with the world.
Many authors with disabilities rely on AI-assisted technology for dictation, editing, and even structuring their work. Whether it’s voice-to-text software, predictive text tools, or AI-powered grammar correction, these tools don’t replace human creativity—they empower it.
Yet Medium wants to pretend that any AI involvement makes writing illegitimate.
So here’s the real question:
- Are they banning AI, or are they punishing people who need it?
- Would they tell Stephen Hawking that his books weren’t “real writing”?
- How many brilliant voices are they silencing with this policy?
Medium’s war on AI isn’t about quality—it’s about control. And in the process, they are actively excluding disabled writers who use assistive technology to share their voices.
This Isn’t Just Censorship—It’s Discrimination.
If AI-assisted writing is a problem, then they need to admit that they are silencing people who rely on AI to communicate. But they won’t—because that would expose the true hypocrisy of their policies.
This isn’t about protecting writing.
It’s about deciding who gets to write at all.
The Publishing Industry’s Dirty Secret: They Use AI Too
Medium and other platforms want to demonize AI-generated content—but let’s expose their hypocrisy.
The truth is, traditional publishers rely on AI at every stage of the publishing process.
- AI-driven tools like Grammarly, ProWritingAid, and Hemingway Editor are used to fix punctuation, grammar, and structure before books hit the shelves. I can tell you right now—we do too, and I’m sure a lot of you do as well.
- AI is used for book formatting, layout, and content analysis to ensure readability and consistency.
- Publishers even use AI to predict market trends, analyzing data to decide which books and authors are worth investing in.
So let’s ask the obvious question:
If AI-assisted content is so bad, why does the publishing industry depend on it?
Because they know the truth—AI is a tool, not a replacement.
If a bestselling author runs their manuscript through AI-powered editing software, does that mean it’s no longer human writing?
If a journalist uses AI to assist with research, does that make their work less credible?
Of course not.
But Medium wants to pretend that any use of AI is “fraudulent”—unless, of course, they are the ones using it to detect and suppress content.
The hypocrisy is staggering.
They aren’t banning AI—they’re banning competition.
Where This Is Going: The Future of Writing on Medium
Medium’s announcement makes one thing clear:
- AI will be used to police content, but AI-generated content won’t be allowed (hypocrisy at its finest).
- Writers who rely on their audience for engagement risk getting flagged.
- The Partner Program will be increasingly selective, meaning fewer independent writers will actually earn from their work.
The result? A platform where only approved authors get to succeed, while others are quietly shadowbanned, demonetized, or pushed off entirely.
The Battle for Free Speech: Where Medium Stands
As the fight against online censorship intensifies, Medium’s latest crackdown comes at a pivotal moment. With President Trump signing Executive Order 14149: Restoring Freedom of Speech and Ending Federal Censorship, the U.S. government is taking steps to prevent platforms from silencing voices under the guise of “quality control” or “content moderation.”
Yet, Medium’s new policy blatantly ignores this shift. Instead of promoting an open marketplace of ideas, they are doubling down on AI-driven content policing, selective enforcement, and shadowbanning tactics to control which writers succeed and which ones vanish from public view.
This is the real war on writing—where independent voices are crushed, narratives are curated, and corporate platforms dictate who gets heard. If Medium truly believed in the power of writing, they’d stand for free speech, not serve as gatekeepers deciding which writers are “worthy” of visibility and compensation.
Medium has made its position clear: if they don’t approve of your words, they’ll make sure no one sees them.
Writers Beware: Medium Is No Longer a Free Platform
Medium is proving itself to be yet another Big Tech-controlled outlet, where speech is policed, reach is restricted, and “quality” is whatever they decide it to be.
If you’re an independent writer, journalist, or content creator, now is the time to start diversifying your platforms. The internet is filled with platforms that support free speech and real engagement—Medium is just showing us it’s no longer one of them.
Final Thoughts
Medium’s latest move isn’t about fraud prevention. It’s about controlling what gets read, who gets paid, and which voices get heard.
This isn’t about “protecting readers from spam.” It’s not about “quality control.” It’s about curating a narrative. Medium, like so many other platforms, wants to decide who succeeds and who disappears.
They aren’t just shutting down AI-generated spam—they are shutting down competition. They are silencing independent voices that refuse to play by their rules. And they are doing it under the false pretense of “protecting the integrity of writing.”
The message is clear:
- If your work challenges the status quo, you’re a target.
- If you build your audience organically, they’ll call it “inauthentic engagement.”
- If you use the same tools the publishing industry does, they’ll call it “fraud.”
And yet, Medium is using AI to police content while banning AI-assisted writing. They claim to fight misinformation, yet they create their own distorted version of truth. They claim to empower writers, yet they strip away recognition from those who don’t conform.
Let’s not pretend this is an isolated issue. This is the future of censorship, playing out in real-time. Other platforms will follow, adopting similar policies to suppress independent journalism, free thought, and genuine discussion.
So what do we do?
We fight back. We call them out. We build platforms where real voices can thrive.
Because Medium isn’t protecting writers.
It’s silencing them.
And we won’t be next.
Medium’s latest announcement, sent via the Daily Digest (one of their multiple blogs), should set off alarm bells for any writer who values free speech, independence, and fairness. Their full post on the matter can be found here.

Great points, but I think part of what Medium is doing is just straight-up greed. They are trying to pay authors less than what they’re paying ($50 a year)so they can make a profit, because I think they’re going broke. If everyone pays $50 a year and earn $300, then Medium is running a big deficit. I recommended that they include advertisements to generate additional income. I made enough money last year to cover the Medium and WP fees, but this year, not so much.
Great points, Edward. I agree! You’re absolutely right—Medium’s crackdown isn’t just about AI or ‘fraud’; it’s also about their bottom line. If too many writers are earning more than what they’re paying in fees, then Medium has a financial problem, and instead of being transparent, they’re tightening the noose on payouts.
If they were truly about supporting writers, like you said, they’d find alternative revenue streams—like ads, partnerships, or a fairer payment system. But instead, they’d rather limit who gets paid while keeping the membership fees rolling in. That’s not a sustainable model, and if they keep this up, it’ll only drive more writers away.
I don’t know how much income they actually bring in, or else we could have included that in the article. Regardless, the reality is clear—this is about control and likely profit, not quality.
Thanks for sharing your experience—it’s important that people see the real reason behind these changes. It’s not about ‘quality’; it’s about control and cash flow.
They are not transparent, so we’ll never know. I feel bad for those who paid the Friend of Medium fee and are earning pennies. Thank you for the great discussion.
You’re welcome, Edward! And you’re absolutely right—their lack of transparency says it all. We’ll never truly know how much they’re making or how much they’re cutting from writers behind the scenes.
And the people who paid for the Friend of Medium fee only to earn pennies? That’s a slap in the face.
They’re happy to take money from writers, but when it comes to actually supporting them? Silence.
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts—conversations like this expose the truth they don’t want people to see. I hope you have a great night! 😎
I’m glad I chose to write on WordPress instead of on Medium. The day WP follows Mediums tactics, will be the day I stop writing.
And thank you so much for explaining that these AI tools are just that, tools. I have had snide comments made about my husband and I using song generation software, but since his stroke, he can’t play guitar and bass as proficiently as he could before. Thus AI is empowering both of us to continue doing what we enjoy. Songwriting.
Thank you very much for sharing that, Sheila! You are absolutely right—AI is a tool, just like an instrument, a word processor, or an audio mixer. It doesn’t replace human creativity; it enhances it. What you and your husband are doing is exactly what technology should be used for—giving people the power to keep creating, not silencing them.
And you’re right—if WordPress ever follows Medium’s path, independent writers will have no choice but to move elsewhere. That’s why it’s so important to call out this censorship now before it spreads any further.
Keep writing, keep creating, and keep proving that creativity isn’t defined by how something is made—it’s defined by the passion behind it. 😎
