And now, Senator Bill Cassidy is sounding the alarm that this treasure trove of biological data could soon fall into the hands of America’s adversaries—namely China.
Cassidy, a Republican and physician from Louisiana, issued a pointed letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, urging the administration to intervene immediately through the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS)—a powerful oversight body tasked with halting deals that pose national security risks.
“We’ve already seen cases where foreign adversaries such as China have sought to exploit U.S. laws to acquire information that could be used against specific individuals and our national interests,” Cassidy warned.
A Legal Loophole with Biological Consequences
The danger is real, and it’s immediate. 23andMe has explicitly stated in bankruptcy filings that its genetic data is a sellable asset—meaning unless blocked, that data could become part of a business acquisition with little regard for the national interest or individual privacy.
