North Korean operatives are now systematically using generative artificial intelligence to infiltrate U.S. and European tech companies, posing as legitimate IT workers to siphon funds directly back to the DPRK regime.
According to new findings from cybersecurity firm Okta, North Korean agents are leveraging a vast ecosystem of AI-enhanced tools to craft fake personas, cheat hiring processes, and embed themselves inside major corporations — often undetected.
“Facilitators extensively employ AI-enhanced tools to help minimally skilled, non-native English-speaking workers maintain software engineering positions,” Okta warned in a report circulated this week.
“The scale of observed operations suggests even short-term employment, scaled with automation and GenAI, presents a viable economic opportunity for the DPRK.”
A Playbook of AI-Powered Deception
Okta’s investigation found that DPRK facilitators are using generative AI to:
- Craft automated resumes and cover letters tailored to bypass CV scanners.
- Conduct mock job interviews and scripted Q&A practice.
- Translate and transcribe communications in real time.
- Generate deepfake videos and voice overlays to fake live interview appearances.
- Automate application submissions at scale across multiple companies and multiple fake identities.
- Critique and refine first-round video interviews using AI agents that advise on lighting, filters, facial movement, and conversational “authenticity.”

North Korean operatives are turning AI into a full-service deception agency.
And it’s working.
The Justice Department estimates that DPRK workers have already funneled hundreds of millions of dollars back to Pyongyang through these infiltration schemes.
Ties to Weapons Programs
This isn’t just about financial fraud.
Several workers identified through U.S. investigations have been directly linked to the DPRK’s Munitions Industry Department —
the division responsible for ballistic missile development, weapons production, and classified R&D programs.
In other words:
Money earned through fake job placements is being recycled into North Korea’s missile and weapons systems.
Hiring an unvetted IT contractor today could mean funding a ballistic launch tomorrow.
A Systematic Threat to Western Firms
Top cybersecurity executives are sounding the alarm.
Jeff Lunglhofer, Chief Information Security Officer at Coinbase, told Recorded Future News that almost every Fortune 500 company is now dealing with these types of threats.
“We actually built a rigorous hiring program with adversaries like North Korea in mind,” Lunglhofer said.
“Candidates now face multiple interviews, video validations, and even some mandatory in-person contact before offers are made.”
