They branded it financial freedom. Law enforcement saw it as camouflage for chaos.
In a tightly coordinated cyber operation, German authorities have seized the server infrastructure of the crypto platform “eXch” — a privacy-first cryptocurrency mixer that investigators say laundered hundreds of millions in illicit digital funds, including assets linked to the infamous $1.46 billion Bybit hack.
The takedown — led by Frankfurt’s Internet Crime Division and Germany’s Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) — culminated on April 30, just one day before eXch’s self-declared shutdown date. Officials moved swiftly, anticipating a scorched-earth exit strategy by the platform’s administrators, who had issued a cryptic public warning of “an active transatlantic operation” targeting them for “money laundering and terrorism.”
They weren’t wrong.
INSIDE OPERATION: eXCH STING
According to official statements, German agents:
- Seized over $38.2 million USD in crypto assets
- Confiscated more than 8 terabytes of operational data
- Dismantled eXch’s domestic server infrastructure
- Pre-empted the platform’s planned May 1 shutdown
The raid wasn’t just about freezing funds — it was a digital decapitation. And what law enforcement found inside eXch’s systems could expose a decade of dark finance.
“Despite a short preparation time, the platform’s database and the associated crypto assets were seized,” said the BKA. “Numerous pieces of evidence and leads are now in analysis, and the findings are expected to assist other ongoing investigations.”
eXch, founded in 2014, positioned itself as a privacy-forward digital exchange, offering cloaked transactions on both the clearnet and darknet. Investigators believe that since its inception, nearly $1.9 billion in cryptocurrency has passed through the platform — much of it likely tied to cybercrime, ransomware groups, and sanctioned entities.
THE BYBIT HACK LINK
The operation gained momentum after the February 2025 Bybit breach, which saw $1.46 billion siphoned in one of the largest crypto thefts to date. Blockchain forensic analysts and global intelligence agencies quickly zeroed in on eXch as a central laundering node, after wallet traces showed a steady wash of funds rerouted through its privacy pools.
The Lazarus Group, a North Korean state-sponsored cyber syndicate, is believed to be the main actor behind the Bybit breach — and Elliptic blockchain researchers estimate that over $200 million of the stolen funds were mixed and funneled through eXch.
Despite mounting accusations, eXch publicly denied involvement, claiming only a “small and insignificant” share of stolen assets passed through their service. Their refusal to comply with Bybit’s request to freeze suspect funds only escalated suspicion.
At the time of seizure, one administrator attempted to justify their upcoming shutdown by claiming they were victims of a global power play — but officials saw it for what it was: an evasive maneuver in response to the walls closing in.

The case against eXch isn’t just about Bybit — it’s about the entire digital laundering architecture that hides in plain sight behind buzzwords like “privacy,” “decentralization,” and “anonymity.”
For years, crypto mixers have served as the preferred vehicle for laundering proceeds from:

eXch had long operated under the radar, servicing transactions across borders while shielding users from scrutiny. It offered tools not just for decentralization — but for deniability.
Law enforcement now believes the takedown of eXch could unlock investigations into countless other cybercrimes — potentially spanning organized digital crime networks, rogue states, and terror financing rings.
