A sprawling, professionalized scam operation is sweeping across the internet—one that weaponizes trust in global media brands to siphon billions from unsuspecting victims.
According to new research by Bahrain-based cybersecurity firm CTM360, cybercriminals are systematically cloning trusted news outlets like CNN, BBC, and CNBC to lure people into fraudulent cryptocurrency investment schemes. Over 17,000 fake sites have been discovered, many featuring fabricated news articles that falsely tie prominent politicians, central bank governors, and other high-profile figures to nonexistent “investment opportunities.”
These articles are carefully crafted to appear authentic, mirroring the visual style and journalistic tone of legitimate news organizations. They showcase manipulated headlines such as “Prime Minister Reveals Secret Path to Wealth Using This Crypto Loophole”—all designed to build instant credibility and lower skepticism.
“This is not some amateur phishing attempt,” warns CTM360’s research team. “It’s a highly sophisticated, multi-layered fraud operation that adapts itself to regional targets.”
A Global Scam Tailored to Local Victims
The operation spans more than 50 countries, adjusting its tactics based on geography, language, and cultural cues. In the Middle East, scammers invoke popular regional banks, government agencies, and celebrities to gain trust. In Europe and North America, the focus shifts to tech entrepreneurs, sports icons, or financial analysts.
Researchers uncovered a consistent pattern in these scams:
Initial Contact:
Ads on major platforms like Google and Meta (Facebook/Instagram) drive traffic toward the fake news sites.
Fake News Hook:
Readers encounter phony articles featuring public figures endorsing the scam.
Redirect to Investment Platforms:
Victims are funneled toward fake crypto platforms—most commonly under names like Eclipse Earn, Solara, or Vynex—promising automated crypto trading with guaranteed high returns.
Phony Platform Experience:
The scam sites are highly polished, featuring fake dashboards showing “profits,” forged testimonials, and simulated trading activity.
Data Harvesting:
Victims are asked to upload government IDs, passports, and personal documents—supposedly for “verification”—before depositing an initial sum, typically around $240 USD.
No Trading—Only Theft
Once inside, users see fabricated growth of their accounts. These fake dashboards are engineered to keep victims engaged and depositing more. Any attempt to withdraw triggers a cascade of barriers:
- Sudden “security verification” requirements
- Demands for additional processing fees
- Minimum balance thresholds
- Even threats of account suspension for non-payment.
In reality, there is no actual crypto trading occurring at all. Victims’ deposits are stolen immediately, and their personal data is often bundled for resale on dark web markets.
“This isn’t just financial fraud,” CTM360 emphasizes. “It’s also a mass identity theft campaign.”
Beyond Crypto: The Broader Brand Impersonation Crisis
This crypto scam is part of a broader cybercrime epidemic. In July, separate investigations uncovered an extensive web of fake retail sites impersonating household names such as Apple, PayPal, Nordstrom, Hermès, and Michael Kors—designed to trick shoppers into entering their credit card numbers and personal data.
These sites, much like the fake news portals, are almost indistinguishable from the real thing. They copy the logos, fonts, product photos, and even customer service chat features of legitimate brands, leaving consumers defenseless against subtle traps.
A Coordinated Cybercrime Industry
This global scam surge isn’t being run by small-time crooks. CTM360’s research points to well-funded, organized cybercrime syndicates that operate across national borders, using digital advertising, automation tools, and data brokers to target victims with ruthless precision.
Analysts warn that such operations are accelerating thanks to:
- AI-powered content generators that produce convincing fake articles.
- Bot farms that amplify ads and fake testimonials.
- Cryptocurrency mixing services that launder stolen funds.
- Dark web data markets that provide personal details for tailored attacks.
What You Need to Know
Key Red Flags of These Scams:
- Promises of “guaranteed” high returns on crypto investments.
- News articles that mention political leaders or celebrities promoting investment apps.
- Sites requiring passport or ID uploads before allowing deposits.
- Platforms with suspicious names like Eclipse Earn or Vynex.
- Any site that uses urgency tactics such as “limited-time opportunity” or “spots running out.”
The Takeaway:
This isn’t just another scam—this is an industrial-scale digital confidence racket that’s evolving rapidly.
As these schemes grow in sophistication, traditional advice like “check the URL” may not be enough.
Cybersecurity experts are urging platforms like Google, Meta, and X (formerly Twitter) to crack down harder on malicious ads, though enforcement remains inconsistent.
In the meantime, personal vigilance remains the strongest defense:
- Never trust investment advice from ads or unfamiliar sites.
- Verify articles directly through official news outlets—never through random links.
- Use verified financial apps from trusted stores and sources.
- Watch for subtle URL misspellings and odd language usage on websites.
TRJ Reality Check:
The age of trusting headlines has long been dead—mainstream media killed that off years ago. But now, in a digital world where every click can drain your wallet or steal your life, we face a sharper truth: If it looks too good to be true… it’s probably already too late.
