Roblox Corporation, facing mounting scrutiny over repeated child safety failures, has announced the rollout of a facial age verification system to allow users aged 13 and older access to unfiltered chat features through a new program called Trusted Connections.
The company will partner with Persona, a third-party identity verification firm, to handle the data collection and estimation. Users seeking access must upload a government-issued ID and submit a video selfie for facial analysis. Roblox claims it will not receive raw ID data, and that Persona will delete biometric data after 30 days.
The goal, according to Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman, is to “foster positive interactions” by giving older users the freedom to communicate with known, verified contacts in a less restricted digital environment.
But critics aren’t buying it — and neither is TRJ.
CONTEXT — A Platform Under Fire, Pressed to Evolve
Roblox, which boasts tens of millions of daily users, has faced multiple lawsuits over grooming, predatory abuse, and child exploitation — with the most recent filed July 9, accusing the company of enabling a predator who later attempted to rape a minor he met through the app.
“This isn’t just about platform evolution,” said a TRJ analyst. “This is about shielding the brand from a courtroom reckoning.”
The new Trusted Connections feature provides a two-tiered communication framework:
- Unfiltered private chat with verified individuals
- Standard filtered messaging for all other accounts
It’s a sharp pivot — one that mirrors recent tech industry trends driven by regulatory heat and legal exposure. But the cost is being measured in biometric compliance and digital identity surrender.
HOW IT WORKS — The Surveillance Loop Disguised as Safety
Here’s what users must do to unlock unfiltered chat:
- Submit a video selfie to perform facial age estimation
- Upload a government-issued ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.)
- Match the two using Persona’s backend biometric pipeline
- Wait for age verification approval
Persona, also used by Reddit for similar age checks, will retain user data for 30 days, per Roblox documentation. Roblox asserts it will not access raw files, though cross-platform Persona usage may create aggregated biometric profiles.
“This isn’t just Roblox verifying you,” warns TRJ’s digital privacy unit. “This is a third-party vendor building a shadow database of kids’ and teens’ faces, matched with government IDs — across multiple platforms.”
THE LEGAL FRONT — Age Verification Becoming Law of the Land
Roblox’s announcement comes in the wake of growing political and legal pressure to enforce age verification:
- On June 27, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a Texas law mandating age checks for adult content access — a major victory for AG Ken Paxton
- Two dozen states now require age verification for pornography, social media, or any content deemed “adult”
- Florida AG James Uthmeier subpoenaed Roblox in April 2025 to provide internal docs detailing how it protects minors and verifies age
Roblox is racing to show compliance before lawsuits and legislation back it into a corner.
But privacy experts argue these “solutions” are surveillance-first, child-protection-second.
THE DARK SIDE OF “TRUSTED CONNECTIONS” — Biometric Bypass Risks
Trusted Connections will allow verified users to chat more freely — a feature that, while framed as safety, removes content filters for “trusted” contacts. This creates a new layer of risk:
- Verified adults could still groom teens, now with fewer moderation barriers
- ID uploads are only a gate — not a behavior monitor
- Persona’s identity pipeline could be spoofed using deepfakes or synthetic IDs
In short: verification ≠ safety. The system may create a false sense of security, enabling more covert manipulation by determined predators.

TRJ investigations into Roblox’s prior data practices uncovered delayed moderation escalations, internal tooling that struggled to detect code-worded grooming behavior, and a heavy reliance on community flagging over predictive AI pattern recognition.
In parallel, TRJ has verified that Persona’s facial estimation models were trained using publicly scraped biometric datasets — several of which remain under legal dispute for unauthorized data harvesting.
Industry sources and child safety researchers have flagged concerns dating back to early 2024, suggesting that some Roblox developers internally questioned the lack of user opt-outs and the risks of biometric transmission from mobile devices to Persona’s API endpoints. While no internal documentation has surfaced to date, ongoing litigation and regulatory pressure may yet bring these communications to light.

Roblox’s Trusted Connections may be a step toward greater user accountability — but it’s also a step deeper into the surveillance state.
