Thousands of Youth Recruited into a Shadow Cyber Syndicate Blending Digital Mayhem with Real-World Violence
They don’t wear masks. They don’t need a dark web alias. And they’re not some distant nation-state army — they’re kids. Teenagers. Some barely 12 years old. But what they’ve joined — or built — is far more dangerous than your average hacktivist crew.
It’s called The Com — a sprawling, decentralized cybercriminal movement that now counts thousands of members across multiple countries.
And what they do goes far beyond “trolling.”
According to the FBI, The Com is responsible for:
- Widespread ransomware attacks
- Swatting campaigns against minors and celebrities
- Cryptocurrency theft and SIM swapping
- The development and distribution of malware
- Child exploitation and sadistic blackmail
- Real-world violence, including kidnappings and stabbings
What began as a loosely organized gaming-based crew has metastasized into an ideological, financial, and terror-based web — one that not only preys on society but on itself.
FROM GAMING SQUADS TO DIGITAL WARFARE
The Com’s roots lie in online gaming communities and chat servers, where teens and young adults began swapping tactics — from crashing servers to doxing and exploiting weak digital infrastructure.
Over time, the tactics escalated. So did the numbers.
Now, the group recruits directly from gaming forums, Discord servers, and social platforms, drawing in members between the ages of 11 and 25. Many are minors deliberately recruited because of their legal status — juveniles face lighter charges and are harder to prosecute.
The FBI confirms that The Com is now composed of multiple subgroups, including:
- Hacker Com
- IRL Com (In Real Life)
- Extortion Com
- 764
Each specializes in a different flavor of chaos — and some are now crossing the line into organized terrorism.
A DIGITAL BLOODBATH — INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY
Inside the ecosystem, there’s no loyalty — only notoriety. Members often swat each other, steal from one another, and brag about internal sabotage as much as external hits.
According to the FBI:
“Cryptocurrency theft is the primary motivator for many Com actors, which often leads to internal conflicts… perceived slights or boasting about crypto balances can provoke members to attack each other.”
These aren’t idle threats.
The FBI has documented cases of torture, armed home invasions, and kidnapping tied to members of The Com targeting fellow hackers over feuds, stolen profits, or rival group affiliations.
And when the digital vendettas spill into reality, they do so under the banners of IRL Com and Extortion Com — violent subgroups with real-world capabilities.
IRL COM — WHEN DIGITAL VIOLENCE GOES PHYSICAL
If Hacker Com builds the malware, IRL Com swings the bat.
This subgroup has been linked to:
- Physical assaults
- Bricking (destroying devices/homes)
- Stabbings
- Kidnappings
- Robberies and drive-by shootings
According to federal investigators, IRL Com now offers violence-as-a-service, where members — or hired affiliates — will attack targets IRL (in real life) in response to online conflicts, unpaid debts, or threats to group secrecy.
EXTORTION COM — THE SADISTIC ENGINE
The darkest face of The Com may be Extortion Com, which primarily targets children — specifically young girls.
Their tactics include:
- Doxing
- Swatting
- Revenge pornography
- Threats of violence
- Grooming minors to produce exploitative content
In one high-profile case, a British teen was arrested after blackmailing underage girls with threats of mass doxing and public humiliation. The U.K.’s National Crime Agency has issued multiple alerts about Com-affiliated groups targeting “a new generation of boys” who are being radicalized into misogynistic violence and CSAM trafficking.
The FBI notes that these networks now trade sadistic material openly, sometimes for clout, sometimes for crypto — but always with disturbing ease.
764 — THE ACCELERATIONIST CELL
One of the most alarming offshoots is 764, a radical cell within The Com whose goal isn’t just money — it’s collapse.
According to FBI Special Agent Robert Kissane, 764 embodies:
“An accelerationist kind of group… the idea that they want to sow chaos and bring about violence, to bring about the downfall of society.”
764 members specifically target minors for psychological manipulation, often coercing them into self-harm, illegal acts, or worse — the production of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) for public dissemination or sale.
THE DARK INCENTIVE SYSTEM
The Com thrives on three primary currencies:
Notoriety
Cryptocurrency
Fear
There are no fixed leaders. No initiation. Just screens, usernames, and calculated savagery.
Members:
- Build and rent out ransomware kits
- Execute SIM swaps to drain wallets
- Sell access to compromised government accounts
- Trade CSAM, sometimes as “revenge” or punishment
- Weaponize mental health vulnerabilities for extortion
They operate globally but move like ghosts — using VPN chains, encrypted comms, burner devices, and increasingly AI-generated voices or deepfakes to impersonate others and trigger attacks.
FBI RESPONSE: TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE?
Despite multiple federal bulletins and warnings, The Com continues to grow. Its decentralized, viral structure makes it nearly impossible to take down entirely.
The FBI, DOJ, and foreign partners have made arrests — but most prosecutions are delayed, sealed, or undercut by the offenders’ ages.
The Bureau has expressed concern that this new generation of cyber-radicals may be forming long-term criminal infrastructure that will outlast current countermeasures.
