This week has felt heavier than most. Not because the sky fell in one catastrophic moment, but because the ground beneath us keeps eroding — slowly, steadily, almost unnoticed by those too distracted to care. One act of violence here. One careless choice there. One warning ignored because it’s easier to dismiss conviction than to change course. It is a rot that doesn’t sleep.
We have reached a point where headlines of people killing people, children killing children, and lives self-extinguished don’t shock us anymore. They scroll by like weather reports, just another update in a sea of noise. And yet, behind every statistic is a face. Behind every body count is a family. These are not nameless entries in a police log — they are souls. They are the image-bearers of God —
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”
— each one formed in the secret place, knit together with care, intended for a purpose beyond the violence that claimed them.
And the violence isn’t just confined to some war-torn city halfway across the world. It’s here and it’s in our neighborhoods, in the grocery store parking lots, in the school hallways, and — in my case this week — in the very roads we travel. I am a professional driver, trained to anticipate, adapt, and protect not just my own life but the lives around me. And yet, in just the last seven days, I was almost killed three separate times because of the carelessness of others.
Not because they lacked the ability to drive — but because they lacked the will to care. Their hands held the wheel, but their hearts were somewhere else entirely. A phone call and maybe a text message or an ego that couldn’t bear to let someone merge first. These were not “accidents” waiting to happen — they were choices.
It’s as if half the population woke up one morning with a free license to live without consequence. They run red lights with a smirk, looking at you as they are turning, like you’re doing something wrong — LOL — when you actually have the right of way. They drift lazily into oncoming lanes like the laws of physics are beneath them. They tear through school zones at highway speeds, indifferent to the children walking nearby. They drive not just as if traffic laws are suggestions — but as if the very laws that govern man and nature no longer apply to them.
But those laws still stand. They always have and they always will.
And the God who set the boundaries of the seas, who commanded the morning to know its place, has not gone blind to the chaos on the streets —
“And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?” (Job 38:11)
“The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.” (Proverbs 15:3)
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” (Galatians 6:7)
The same spirit of lawlessness infecting our roads is the same spirit tearing apart our homes, our cities, and our nations. It is the reason a child can pick up a gun and take a life. It is the reason a man will look in the mirror and decide he cannot face another sunrise. It is the reason our news cycles run on blood and grief.
And yet — in all of this, God’s truth remains unchanged: There are consequences. Both here and in eternity.
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.” (2 Corinthians 5:10)
The problem is not just the presence of evil. The problem is the absence of reverence. Without the fear of the Lord, there is no respect for life, no restraint in our impulses, no regard for the cost of our actions.
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10)
I praise our Divine Father, the Almighty God, because His hand has preserved me this week — not because of my skill behind the wheel, but because He still has purpose for my life. I praise my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for shedding His blood for my sins when I was undeserving. I praise the Holy Spirit for guiding me, warning me, and steadying me in moments when seconds separated life from death.
“The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust.” (Psalm 18:2)
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We come before You today grieved by the violence, the recklessness, and the lawlessness that fills our streets and our world. We ask for Your mercy over those who are hurting and for Your conviction to fall upon those who live without regard for You or the lives of others.
Lord, guard our steps and protect our journeys. Keep our minds alert and our hearts anchored in Your truth. Bring repentance to the reckless, healing to the broken, and salvation to the lost.
We praise You, Almighty God, for Your protection and for the gift of another day. We praise Jesus Christ for the salvation He purchased for us. We thank the Holy Spirit for guiding and convicting us when the world pulls us toward destruction.
We ask all this in the mighty and precious name of Jesus.
Amen.

I am also very thankful that you are safe in spite of the carelessness of others, John. This week was a horrid week of news. As you mention, each person is special in God’s sight but so many don’t believe it or are moving so fast that they don’t have time to care about others. My wife and I were talking about the violence in the news this past week and I am beginning to wonder if there will be a day that goes by when we don’t hear of some violent event. You Tube channels are created around such things and there seems to be no lack of “news.”
The Bible verses you have chosen here are very appropriate for this subject. Thank you for sharing. May God continue to keep you safe!
Thank you very much, Chris — I truly appreciate that. This really was a horrid week of news, and sadly, I believe the trend is only heading in a worse direction. It breaks my heart to see how many people have lost sight of the truth that every life is precious in God’s eyes. The speed of life and the constant chase for the next thing seem to leave no room for compassion or care. I’ve also wondered if we’ll ever see a day when the headlines aren’t filled with violence. And with so many platforms profiting from tragedy, it’s as though the world has learned to accept it as normal. I pray that God continues to protect you and your family, and that He keeps our eyes fixed on Him and our hearts steady in these times. 🙏 😎
Thank you for your kind words and prayers, John. I pray for you and your family as well during these crazy times. Yes, it is so important to keep our eyes fixed on Him and our hearts steady. I hope you have a great day!
God’s blessings…
What a beautiful prayer! And we are also thankful you are alive and doing well! We see the irreverence for life from drivers in our area too, and wondered if it was happening everywhere.
Thank you very much, Sheila — yes, sadly, that irreverence for life on the road does seem to be everywhere now. It’s heartbreaking to see how common it’s become, but it’s also a reminder that we need to stay even more alert, stay prayerful, and keep leaning on God for His protection and guidance. I used to love driving, and unfortunately, I’m starting to dislike it. Never ever thought I would say that. Thanks again, Sheila — always greatly appreciated. I hope you have a blessed day. 🙏 😎
I never thought I would stop driving either. But I did. And I don’t miss it!
I hear you, Sheila — and I can understand why. The way things are now, it’s almost like driving has turned into a daily battle instead of something to enjoy. I’m glad you’ve found peace without it, and honestly, I’m at that point as well. It’s getting too dangerous, and with motorbikes, scooters, and ATVs, it just makes it that much worse. I have nothing against those — but the people who drive them and break the law create dangerous situations for everyone.
Yes, you know it, John. People have no respect for anyone or anything anymore.
