The U.S. federal courts have handed down one of the most severe sentences yet for a member of the cybercriminal syndicate Scattered Spider. On Wednesday, 20-year-old Noah Michael Urban was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay $13 million in restitution to more than 30 victims after pleading guilty to a string of cybercrime charges.
The judge’s ruling exceeded prosecutors’ recommended eight-year term, reflecting the scale of damages tied to Urban’s crimes. Alongside his prison time, he will face three years of supervised release and the forfeiture of nearly $2.9 million in cryptocurrency seized from his desktop computer.
How the Scheme Worked
According to court filings and Urban’s plea deal, the operation spanned from August 2022 through March 2023. He and his fellow Scattered Spider members engaged in:
- SMS phishing campaigns: Sending spoofed text messages to employees of target companies.
- Credential theft: Harvesting stolen logins to access employee accounts and internal systems.
- SIM swapping: Hijacking mobile numbers by tricking telecom support staff, allowing them to intercept two-factor authentication codes.
- Corporate intrusions: Using stolen credentials to infiltrate companies’ networks, steal sensitive documents, and exfiltrate millions in cryptocurrency.
Urban admitted to the FBI that all of the seized cryptocurrency was directly tied to his work with Scattered Spider. Investigators confirmed at least $2.6 million stolen from 16 individual victims, though the Justice Department estimates total damages between $9.5 million and $25 million.
Scattered Spider’s Broader Campaign
Scattered Spider — known for its relentless social engineering tactics — has become one of the most disruptive cybercrime groups of the decade. In 2023, it was linked to the ransomware attack on MGM Resorts in Las Vegas, which crippled casino operations and cost tens of millions in damages.
Urban’s case is part of a wider crackdown:
- Four other affiliates were charged alongside him in November 2023.
- A U.K. national tied to the group was arrested in Palma de Mallorca in June 2024 and is awaiting extradition.
- The whereabouts of two other American suspects remain unconfirmed.
- International law enforcement continues to track ties between Scattered Spider and the broader underground collective known as “the Community” or “the Com.”
Despite arrests, Scattered Spider has proven resilient. After a temporary slowdown following MGM, the group re-emerged in 2025, launching simultaneous assaults on airlines, insurers, and retail giants — forcing service outages and costing corporations millions between March and July 2025.
