Federal prosecutors in Massachusetts have charged an Indian national with assaulting two teenage passengers aboard a Lufthansa flight, an in-flight incident that forced the international jetliner to make an emergency diversion to Boston.
Praneeth Kumar Usiripalli, 28, is accused of attacking two 17-year-old passengers with a metal fork while traveling on Lufthansa Flight 431, en route from Chicago to Frankfurt, Germany. The flight was diverted to Logan International Airport on October 25, 2025, after what investigators described as a violent outburst that endangered both passengers and crew.
According to federal charging documents, one of the victims — identified only as Minor A — had been asleep in a middle seat when he allegedly awoke to find Usiripalli standing over him. Without warning, Usiripalli reportedly struck the teen in the shoulder with a metal fork. Moments later, he allegedly turned toward another nearby passenger, Minor B, and stabbed him in the back of the head with the same utensil, causing a visible laceration.
Witnesses and crew members described a chaotic scene inside the aircraft cabin. As attendants moved to restrain him, Usiripalli allegedly raised his hand, mimed a gun gesture, placed it in his mouth, and motioned as if pulling the trigger — before turning toward a female passenger and slapping her. He then allegedly attempted to strike a member of the flight crew.
The flight’s captain diverted the plane to Boston, where law enforcement officers immediately boarded the aircraft and took Usiripalli into custody. Both teenage victims received prompt medical attention and were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Federal investigators later confirmed that Usiripalli had entered the United States years earlier on a student visa, and was most recently enrolled in a master’s program in biblical studies. At the time of the attack, he no longer possessed lawful immigration status.
Usiripalli now faces one federal count of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm while traveling on an aircraft in the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States, a charge that carries up to 10 years in prison, up to three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Allegra Flamm of the Major Crimes Unit, with investigative support from the FBI Boston Division, the Massachusetts State Police, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations.
Federal officials emphasized that the defendant remains presumed innocent until proven guilty. The FBI has confirmed that it continues to investigate the incident as part of a broader focus on aviation-related violent offenses, which have seen an uptick since international travel restrictions eased in 2023.
This case underscores how rapidly in-flight assaults can escalate, especially on transatlantic routes where law enforcement presence is limited until touchdown. The Realist Juggernaut will continue to monitor federal proceedings as court hearings advance.

Had he been drinking? With the emergence of ‘air rage,’ they don’t let anyone who appears too drunk on the flight. If he hadn’t been drinking, alcohol can’t be blamed this time.
You’re right, Michael — that’s a good question. There’s been no mention of alcohol so far, which makes this case even more unusual. If it wasn’t intoxication, then something deeper was clearly off here. Either way, it shows how unpredictable and dangerous these situations can become when someone unravels mid-flight.
This guy was enrolled in a master’s program in biblical studies? This behavior sounds like mental illness to me and I wonder how the guy ever achieved a B.A. of any type. If he is mentally ill, people who know him should be well aware of strange behavior coming from him before. If he has never acted strangely and this is out of the blue then I’m at a loss to understand it.
Hopefully the courts will figure this out and I appreciate that the Realist Juggernaut will continue to monitor federal proceedings as court hearings advance.
Thank you, Chris — I appreciate that. You’re right, this case raises serious questions. Whether it’s mental instability or something else entirely, it’s troubling how someone can appear normal one day and completely unravel the next. Hopefully, the courts handle it with the seriousness it deserves. I appreciate you always taking the time to weigh in with genuine thought and perspective. It’s always good to look at these types of situations in different ways. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and I always appreciate your willingness to reply to my comments. Thank you for letting your readers know what is happening out there. I can be a crazy world!
