Nine Arrested Across Europe in $700 Million Cryptocurrency Scam Network Takedown

European authorities have dismantled a sprawling international investment fraud ring accused of running dozens of fake cryptocurrency trading platforms that defrauded investors of nearly $700 million.

The coordinated law enforcement operation—spanning Cyprus, Spain, and Germany—led to nine arrests and the seizure of luxury goods, cash, and crypto assets. The case represents one of Europe’s largest known takedowns of digital finance fraud networks in recent years.

Sophisticated Deception, Familiar Promise

According to investigators with Eurojust, the European Union’s Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation, the network meticulously built counterfeit trading websites that mimicked legitimate cryptocurrency exchanges. These platforms promised high returns on digital investments, leveraging professional-looking dashboards, real-time data simulations, and false guarantees of portfolio growth.

Victims were lured through social media advertising, cold calls, fake investment articles, and fabricated celebrity endorsements—a tactic law enforcement says mirrors earlier crypto “pump-and-drain” schemes. Once deposits were made, victims were blocked from withdrawals, while their funds were swiftly laundered through blockchain wallets and offshore accounts.

The scheme’s operators reportedly maintained call centers to sustain the illusion of authenticity, contacting victims regularly to solicit additional “top-up investments” or persuade them to reinvest their returns.

Arrests and Cross-Border Coordination

Authorities executed simultaneous raids in late October under the direction of French and Spanish prosecutors, supported by Europol and national financial crime units.
The Paris Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that French investigative judges had issued arrest warrants for six of the suspects linked to the network.

Searches across the three countries uncovered approximately €1.5 million ($1.7 million) in seized cash and cryptocurrency, as well as luxury watches worth more than €100,000 ($115,000).

Officials estimate that at least €600 million (about $690 million) was stolen and laundered through blockchain channels designed to obscure the flow of funds—evidence that cybercriminals continue to exploit decentralized financial systems to scale fraud operations at unprecedented speed.

Pattern of Expanding Crypto Exploitation

The takedown follows a similar Eurojust-led operation in September against another organized crime network responsible for stealing €100 million ($115 million) through fraudulent crypto investment schemes.
Investigators say the repeated emergence of these large-scale networks highlights an evolving global threat: organized financial cybercrime merging with traditional fraud ecosystems.

Authorities are now tracking additional suspects believed to have operated in support roles—maintaining websites, processing crypto transactions, and providing false identity verification services.
