A Lake Traverse Reservation assault that began with a domestic argument and ended with multiple stab wounds has now culminated in a federal prison sentence, bringing a violent February encounter into legal resolution under the jurisdictional framework governing serious crimes committed in Indian Country.
Federal prosecutors announced that Garrett Joseph Ojeda, Sr., 33, of Sisseton, South Dakota, has been sentenced to two years and eleven months in federal prison following his conviction for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. The sentence, imposed by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann, includes three years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
A Domestic Argument That Turned Violent
According to court records, the assault occurred on February 9, 2025, within the boundaries of the Lake Traverse Reservation, placing the case under federal jurisdiction. The confrontation began with a dispute over a missing TV remote — a minor grievance that escalated rapidly into an act of serious violence.
Ojeda attacked the victim with a knife, stabbing them several times before the victim was able to escape. The injuries were severe enough to require medical intervention and reparative surgery, underscoring the level of force used during the incident.
Federal Jurisdiction and the Major Crimes Act
Because the crime occurred in Indian Country and involved Native American individuals, prosecution fell under the Major Crimes Act, which mandates federal jurisdiction for specific violent offenses committed in tribal territory. This statute ensures that cases involving serious bodily harm or dangerous weapons are handled within the federal system, where sentencing authority exceeds that of tribal courts.
Ojeda was indicted in July 2025 and formally pleaded guilty on September 15, 2025, avoiding trial by admitting to the charge.
Joint Tribal–Federal Investigation
The investigation involved coordinated work between the FBI and Sisseton-Wahpeton Law Enforcement, reflecting the layered response model frequently deployed in violent incidents on tribal land. These partnerships allow federal resources and tribal law enforcement capacity to combine in cases involving dangerous weapons or significant bodily injury.
The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth A. Ebert-Webb, who emphasized the serious nature of the attack and the federal responsibility to safeguard victims of violent crime within Indian Country.
Upon sentencing, Ojeda was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to begin serving his term.
TRJ Assessment
The federal sentencing framework exists because many tribal courts lack the statutory authority to impose penalties commensurate with violence involving knives, firearms, or severe bodily injury.
The nearly three-year federal sentence underscores the seriousness of the offense, but it also highlights the broader systemic issues — domestic volatility, gaps in intervention resources, and the ongoing strain on tribal law enforcement — that allow such incidents to occur.
The legal resolution provides accountability. The deeper questions, however, remain: what prevents escalation inside the home, and how many violent encounters begin with the same pattern — a small argument, a moment of anger, a weapon within reach?

Very good questions at the end, John. Thank you for your article and I hope you are having a good day!
You’re very welcome, Chris — I appreciate that. Those questions matter because they sit at the center of why incidents like this keep repeating, far beyond the specific case. Accountability closes one chapter, but the deeper patterns inside the home are what determine whether the next one starts.
I hope your day is going well too, Chris, and thank you again for taking the time to read and respond. 😎
