A Pine Ridge, South Dakota, woman has been sentenced to federal prison for her involvement in a methamphetamine distribution conspiracy that operated within the Pine Ridge community, according to federal prosecutors.
Elisha Rose Merdanian, 21, was sentenced on December 15, 2025, by U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler to two years in federal prison, followed by four years of supervised release. The court also imposed a $100 special assessment payable to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Merdanian was remanded into custody immediately following sentencing.
Merdanian was indicted by a federal grand jury in December 2024 on one count of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance. She entered a guilty plea on September 18, 2025.
According to court records, Merdanian’s involvement in the conspiracy began no later than October 2023. Investigators determined that she worked with a Pine Ridge–based source of supply to distribute methamphetamine within the local community. Her role included selling methamphetamine directly to end users, assisting co-conspirators in identifying potential buyers, and arranging drug transactions on behalf of others involved in the operation.
Federal authorities described the conspiracy as part of a broader pattern of methamphetamine trafficking impacting tribal communities, where distribution networks often exploit geographic isolation and limited resources. While Merdanian was not identified as a primary organizer, prosecutors emphasized that facilitation roles — including connecting buyers and sellers — play a critical function in sustaining local drug markets.
The investigation was conducted by the Badlands Safe Trails Task Force, a multi-agency partnership composed of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs Division of Drug Enforcement, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Edward C. Tarbay.
Federal officials noted that task force–based enforcement remains a key strategy in addressing drug trafficking within Indian Country, where coordinated federal, state, and tribal responses are often required to dismantle distribution networks.
