It doesn’t ask how steady you’ve been lately,
Or why your smile arrived a little faintly.
It simply pulls another chair in close,
As if it knew you needed that the most.
The space appears without a word or sign,
Like something waiting patiently in time.
The plates are mismatched, stories written deep
In scratches years and careless hands still keep.
Each chip and crack a record of a meal
That mattered more than how it came to feel.
The food arrives imperfect, warm, and real,
Some dishes slow, some finished before ideal.
No one is counting portions, cost, or share—
The rule is simple: everyone gets there.
The talk wanders, doubles back again,
From childhood jokes to where the years have been.
A name gets dropped, remembered with a grin,
And suddenly the past steps softly in.

And no one minds the rhythm breaking proud.
A glass tips over, spills across the cloth,
And towels arrive before a single thought.
