The cross-border pursuit of Michelle Angelica Pineda, known by the alias “La Chely,” ended with a 50-year prison sentence handed down by a Chihuahuan State judge on December 27, closing a case that spanned international boundaries, multiple law-enforcement agencies, and a trail of extreme violence tied to organized criminal activity in northern Mexico.
Pineda, a Mexican national, was sentenced alongside five affiliated sicarios connected to the Artistas Assessino criminal group for their role in the murder of 23-year-old Jorge Rentería Rodríguez. The conviction represents one of the most severe sentences imposed in the region for cartel-aligned homicide operations involving cross-border movement and coordination.
Her capture in 2024 followed an active investigation by federal and local authorities in El Paso, who determined that Pineda had illegally entered the United States while continuing to operate as a key figure within a drug trafficking and enforcement network tied to Mexico-based criminal leadership. Investigators linked her to at least five homicides in Ciudad Juárez, with intelligence indicating involvement in additional killings that remain under investigation.
According to authorities, Pineda was not a peripheral courier or logistical assistant. She was identified as an operational actor known for extreme brutality, using violence as both punishment and intimidation. Investigators documented ritualized killings associated with Santa Muerte iconography, including the dismemberment of victims and the placement of removed hearts at makeshift altars — acts intended to reinforce control, instill fear, and signal allegiance within criminal circles.
On February 15, 2024, members of the FBI El Paso Safe Streets Gang Task Force, working alongside U.S. Border Patrol, located Pineda at a local motel during early-morning operations. The arrest was the result of coordinated intelligence sharing that traced her movements following her unlawful entry into the United States.
When agents entered the room where Pineda was located, they recovered an array of weapons and narcotics consistent with active trafficking operations. Firearms and machetes were found alongside fentanyl pills, powdered fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and Xanax. The quantity and variety of substances indicated distribution-level activity rather than personal possession.
Pineda was taken into custody by U.S. Customs and Border Protection before being escorted to a port of entry, where she was formally transferred into the custody of Chihuahua State Police and the State Attorney General of Chihuahua. The transfer underscored the operational coordination between U.S. and Mexican authorities in cases involving violent fugitives sought for prosecution abroad.
Federal officials emphasized that the rapid identification, arrest, and transfer of Pineda removed an active violent offender from U.S. communities while ensuring accountability for crimes committed in Mexico. The case highlighted the importance of task-force-based operations that bridge jurisdictional boundaries and prevent transnational actors from exploiting geographic separation to evade justice.
The investigation was conducted through the FBI’s Safe Streets Gang Task Force operating out of the Texas Anti-Gang Center, with participation from the El Paso Police Department Gang Unit, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division, El Paso Independent School District Police Department, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and private-sector intelligence support. The collaboration reflected the scale and complexity of cases involving cartel-linked violence that crosses national borders.
With sentencing now complete, Pineda will serve her term within the Mexican prison system, effectively removing a documented violent operator from circulation. For investigators, the case stands as a reminder that cross-border criminal activity does not end at the boundary line — and neither does enforcement when coordination, intelligence, and timing align.

Such awful crimes. Fifty years in a Mexican prison is a long time. Maybe others will think twice before committing crimes like this.
Thank you for this report.
You’re welcome, Chris. The severity of the sentence reflects the seriousness of the crimes and the harm caused. Cases like this show that crossing borders do not erase accountability, especially when violence is involved.
Thank you again, Chris. I hope all is well and that you have a great night. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and I’m glad Mexico is taking this so seriously. Thank you for your reply and your kind words. I hope you have a great night as well! 🙂
