New charges deepen case against suspect accused of premeditated attack on uniformed service members in Washington, D.C.
Federal prosecutors have significantly expanded the criminal case against Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, in connection with a November 26 ambush-style shooting near the White House that killed National Guardsman Sarah Beckstrom and critically wounded National Guardsman Andrew Wolfe.
An unsealed federal indictment filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia adds new charges and formalizes allegations that authorities say reflect premeditation, interstate weapon transport, and deliberate targeting of uniformed personnel in the nation’s capital.
The announcement was made by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, which confirmed that prosecutors are continuing to evaluate additional charges.
EXPANDED CHARGES AND LEGAL EXPOSURE
The superseding indictment adds two counts of assault with intent to kill for injuries sustained by two National Guard majors, identified in court documents as R.R. and E.S., who intervened and subdued Lakanwal at the scene.
The indictment now charges Lakanwal with:
- First-degree murder while armed (premeditated)
- Assault with intent to kill while armed
- Transportation of a firearm and ammunition in interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony
- Four counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence or dangerous offense
Federal prosecutors emphasized that the charging posture reflects the seriousness of the alleged conduct and the evolving scope of the investigation.
THE ATTACK: LOCATION, TIMING, AND RESPONSE
According to court records, Lakanwal allegedly drove his Toyota Prius from Washington State to Washington, D.C., transporting both a firearm and ammunition across state lines. The attack occurred on Wednesday, November 26, the day before Thanksgiving, at approximately 2:13 p.m., near 17th and I Streets NW, close to the Farragut West Metro Station—a high-traffic area near federal buildings and the White House perimeter.
Prosecutors allege that Lakanwal opened fire without provocation, striking Guardsmen Beckstrom and Wolfe in the head. Two nearby National Guard majors immediately responded, physically engaging and restraining the suspect before further casualties could occur.
At the scene, investigators recovered a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver that had been reported stolen in Seattle in 2023, adding a separate criminal dimension involving stolen firearms and interstate transport.
THE VICTIMS
Sarah Beckstrom, 20, succumbed to her injuries on Thanksgiving Day, November 27.
Andrew Wolfe, 24, sustained critical injuries and remains a central victim in the ongoing prosecution.
The presence of additional uniformed National Guard members at the scene—and their immediate intervention—is credited with preventing further loss of life.
SECURITY AND ENFORCEMENT IMPLICATIONS
An ambush-style shooting near the White House carries heightened legal and security significance. Federal authorities treat attacks involving:
- Uniformed service members
- Federal security zones
- Interstate weapon transport
as aggravating factors that elevate both sentencing exposure and investigative priority.
The inclusion of interstate commerce charges signals that prosecutors view the alleged conduct not as a localized act of violence, but as one involving preparatory travel and intent, potentially triggering enhanced penalties under federal law.
INVESTIGATION AND PROSECUTION
The case is being jointly investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation – Washington Field Office and the Metropolitan Police Department.
The prosecution is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, which confirmed that the case remains active and that charging decisions are ongoing.
TRJ VERDICT
This indictment makes one point unmistakably clear: federal authorities are treating the November 26 shooting as a deliberate, premeditated act of lethal violence, not an impulsive incident.
The alleged interstate travel, use of a stolen firearm, and targeting of uniformed National Guard members near the White House place this case in the highest tier of federal criminal enforcement. The added assault charges reflect not only the harm inflicted, but the narrow margin by which additional deaths were avoided.
What remains unresolved is motive. But legally, the structure of the indictment signals a prosecution built for maximum exposure and long-term incapacitation.
The loss of Sarah Beckstrom is irreversible. The case now moves forward as a test of accountability, deterrence, and the federal system’s response to targeted violence against those assigned to protect the nation’s capital.

“The loss of Sarah Beckstrom is irreversible.”
I’ve seen pictures of these two victims on different media sources several times. They were both so young and seemed so happy. It is a tragic case. It looks like they continue to build this case for maximum penalties. How can anyone blame them?
Thank you sharing this and all of the other news you put up today, John. It is always good to see that law enforcement at all levels are having success in making our country a safer place. I appreciate this good reporting. I hope you have a great night and may God bless you and yours!
You’re very welcome, Chris — and you’re right to frame it that way. The loss of Sarah Beckstrom cannot be undone, and no legal outcome can restore what was taken. Seeing their photos only reinforces how young they were and how full their lives should have been. That reality is what makes this case so heavy.
You’re also right about the prosecution. Building a case this carefully, and adding charges as evidence supports them, isn’t excess — it’s responsibility. When an act is this deliberate and this violent, pursuing the full weight of accountability is not only justified, it’s necessary. No one can reasonably fault that approach.
I appreciate your recognition of the work being done across law enforcement levels. When these cases are handled thoroughly and transparently, it matters — not just for justice, but for public trust.
Thank you again for reading so closely and for the kind words. I truly appreciate it. I hope you have a great night as well, and may God bless you and yours. 🙏😎

That is excellently stated, John. Law enforcement should be congratulated for doing the necessary work here.
You’re welcome and thank you for the good reply. Thank you for your kind words I hope you have a great day and May God bless you and yours!
