The attack occurred on Wednesday, November 26, the day before Thanksgiving, at approximately 2:13 p.m., near 17th and I Streets NW, close to the Farragut West Metro Station—a high-traffic area near federal buildings and the White House perimeter.

Prosecutors allege that Lakanwal opened fire without provocation, striking Guardsmen Beckstrom and Wolfe in the head. Two nearby National Guard majors immediately responded, physically engaging and restraining the suspect before further casualties could occur.

At the scene, investigators recovered a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver that had been reported stolen in Seattle in 2023, adding a separate criminal dimension involving stolen firearms and interstate transport.
