Federal authorities have arrested a Mississippi man in connection with an arson attack that severely damaged the Beth Israel Congregation and the Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life, a religious and cultural center serving Jewish communities across the southern United States.
Stephen Spencer Pittman, 19, of Madison, Mississippi, was taken into custody after investigators determined he intentionally set fire to the building during the early morning hours of January 10, 2026. According to federal court records, Pittman allegedly used gasoline to ignite the blaze, causing extensive structural damage and rendering the facility unusable for an indefinite period. The fire occurred while the building was unoccupied, preventing loss of life, but the destruction significantly disrupted religious services and regional community programs.
Surveillance footage recovered from inside the building shows a hooded individual moving through interior spaces while pouring liquid from a container believed to contain an accelerant. Moments later, flames spread rapidly through portions of the structure. Investigators also noted that Pittman sustained burn injuries during the incident, which authorities say is consistent with the manner in which the fire was set.
The arrest was announced by the U.S. Department of Justice in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Local response and scene control were handled by the Jackson Police Department and Jackson Fire Department, which assisted in fire suppression, evidence preservation, and forensic analysis.
Pittman appeared in federal court to face charges outlined in a criminal complaint alleging violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 844(i), a statute that criminalizes the malicious destruction by fire of property used in interstate commerce or in activities affecting interstate commerce. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in federal prison, with a statutory maximum of twenty years. Any sentence would be imposed by a federal district court judge after consideration of sentencing guidelines and statutory factors.
Beth Israel Congregation holds deep historical significance within Mississippi’s Jewish community. Founded in 1860, it is the oldest Jewish congregation in the state and has operated at its current Old Canton Road location since 1967. That same site was previously targeted in a 1967 bombing attributed to the Ku Klux Klan, a reminder of the long-standing threats faced by religious minorities in the region. The Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life, housed within the same complex, provides religious education, cultural preservation, and rabbinical services to Jewish congregations across fourteen states, extending the impact of the attack well beyond a single building.
Federal officials characterized the incident as a targeted attack on a place of worship and emphasized that crimes involving religious institutions are treated with heightened seriousness due to their broader implications for public safety and constitutional rights. Authorities stated that while the suspect is believed to have acted alone, the investigation remains active as forensic review and digital analysis continue.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Matt Allen. Federal officials reiterated that a criminal complaint is an allegation, not a finding of guilt, and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
The investigation falls under a broader federal initiative aimed at addressing violent crime and protecting communities from acts that threaten public safety and civil liberties. Proceedings in the case will continue through the federal court system, with additional details expected to emerge as pretrial motions and hearings move forward.
DOCUMENTED DAMAGE AND SURVEILLANCE EVIDENCE
The images below document the aftermath of the fire inside the Beth Israel and Goldring/Woldenberg Institute building, showing extensive interior burn damage, charred structural elements, and smoke-blackened surfaces consistent with an accelerant-fueled blaze. Also included is a surveillance image captured inside the facility during the incident, depicting a lone individual moving through the interior shortly before the fire spread. These images are presented as visual context referenced in court filings and investigative records and do not constitute a determination of guilt. Images: FBI

This is really unfortunate. This is so recent that I’m surprised I haven’t heard of it. Maybe I missed it or maybe attacks on places like this aren’t press worthy anymore. I hope that isn’t the case. Why in the world anyone, particularly a 19 year old would do something like this is hard to understand. I’m sure that will be one of the questions asked: “Why did you do this?” No matter what the answer, this person should be held accountable for what he has done. I hope he gets a fair trial and I hope his sentence reflects the severity of his crime.
Thank you for this article!
You’re welcome, Chris — your reaction is completely understandable.
You’re right to note how quickly incidents like this can pass without sustained attention. That alone is troubling. Attacks on places of worship should never become routine or unremarkable, regardless of where they occur or who is responsible. They strike at more than property; they target community, history, and the fundamental right to worship without fear.
The question of why someone so young would commit an act like this will likely be examined closely, but as you said, the answer does not change the responsibility. Accountability matters, and so does due process. A fair trial and a sentence that reflects the seriousness of the crime are both essential to maintaining trust in the system.
Thanks again, Chris — I appreciate you taking the time to engage with the article and to emphasize both justice and fairness. Those principles matter, especially in cases like this. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for your good reply. As you stated: ” Attacks on places of worship should never become routine or unremarkable…” I hope this person gets a fair trial and an adequate sentence for his crime.
Thanks again for this report!
