Federal prosecutors have secured a guilty plea from a Florida man whose role in a coordinated digital fraud operation exposed how easily trust-based payment platforms can be weaponized when criminals exploit human behavior faster than institutions adapt their defenses.

In federal court in New Haven, Connecticut, Kuttino Jamal Scott, 24, of Miami, admitted to participating in a conspiracy that defrauded users of the Zelle electronic payment system through impersonation, account manipulation, and social engineering tactics designed to bypass both consumer awareness and institutional safeguards.

The case reflects a broader federal focus on crimes involving peer-to-peer payment platforms, which have become attractive targets due to their speed, familiarity, and perceived legitimacy among consumers who associate them directly with their banks.

Victims first received text messages falsely claiming to originate from their bank, warning of a suspicious Zelle transaction and asking for confirmation.
