Middlesex County Man Sentenced to 15 Years in Federal Prison for Online Sexual Exploitation of a Minor

TRENTON, NEW JERSEY — A Middlesex County man has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for receiving and possessing child sexual abuse material, concluding a case that exposed prolonged online exploitation of a minor and the deliberate use of digital platforms to coerce and control a victim across state lines.

Jeremy Greenwald, 47, of South Amboy, New Jersey, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Trenton to 180 months of imprisonment, followed by 15 years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to federal charges of receipt and possession of child pornography. The sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge Zahid N. Quraishi.

According to court records, Greenwald engaged in a sustained online exploitation scheme between May 2022 and February 2023, during which he used an online chat application to communicate with a minor victim located outside the State of New Jersey. Federal investigators determined that Greenwald did not merely possess illicit material but actively manipulated and directed the victim to produce new sexually explicit images and videos at his instruction.

Court filings describe how Greenwald persuaded the minor to perform specific sexual acts on camera, often dictating the content and presentation of the videos. In several instances, Greenwald purchased and mailed items—including sex toys and costumes—to the victim and instructed her on how to use them while recording videos for his consumption. Investigators also established that Greenwald paid the victim small sums of money, reinforcing a coercive dynamic that blurred exploitation with financial inducement.

A forensic examination of Greenwald’s electronic devices uncovered additional child sexual abuse material, including videos and images depicting prepubescent children engaged in sexually explicit conduct, significantly increasing the severity of the offense under federal sentencing guidelines.

Federal authorities emphasized that this case was not limited to passive possession but involved active grooming, coercion, and direction, elevating the threat posed by the defendant and underscoring the need for a substantial custodial sentence.

The investigation was conducted by special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, working through the FBI Newark Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Roddy. The task force combines federal, state, and local resources to identify offenders, dismantle exploitation networks, and safeguard victims.

This prosecution was brought under Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to combat the sexual exploitation and abuse of children. The program coordinates investigative, prosecutorial, and victim-identification efforts nationwide, particularly in cases involving internet-facilitated abuse.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracey Agnew of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Trenton.

Greenwald will serve his sentence in federal custody. Upon release, he will remain under strict court supervision for 15 years, including conditions designed to restrict contact with minors and limit access to digital platforms.

Federal authorities reiterated that cases involving online grooming and exploitation often remain hidden for extended periods and stressed the importance of continued reporting, investigation, and enforcement to prevent further harm.
