FLORIDA — Federal authorities are warning the public to remain vigilant as romance scams continue to escalate nationwide, with Florida emerging as a significant impact zone ahead of Valentine’s Day. The advisory follows new data showing substantial financial losses across multiple regions of the state, driven by increasingly sophisticated fraud tactics and the expanded use of generative artificial intelligence.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation field office in Jacksonville, more than 550 victims across Florida — spanning Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, Gainesville, Tallahassee, and the Panhandle — reported losses totaling $22.2 million in 2025 alone. Investigators caution that the true scale of harm is likely far higher, as many victims never report losses due to embarrassment, shame, or fear of personal exposure.
Federal analysts report that confidence and romance fraud complaints nationwide exceeded totals recorded in the previous year, signaling that the threat is no longer seasonal but persistent throughout the calendar year. Valentine’s Day remains a predictable spike point, but the underlying criminal infrastructure operates continuously.
Romance scams typically begin with carefully constructed digital identities deployed across dating platforms, social media, and messaging applications. Once contact is established, perpetrators rapidly cultivate emotional dependency, offering sustained attention and romantic affirmation while avoiding in-person meetings. Common pretexts include overseas employment, military service, emergency travel, or family obligations.
As trust deepens, victims are pressured into sending money for fabricated emergencies, travel expenses, medical issues, or exclusive investment opportunities. In many cases, perpetrators deliberately isolate victims by discouraging discussion with family or friends, framing secrecy as proof of loyalty or protection.
Federal investigators note a marked shift in scam quality and scale driven by generative AI technologies. Criminal networks now leverage AI-assisted language tools to eliminate grammatical errors, adapt messaging for U.S. cultural norms, and translate conversations in real time. Synthetic images and curated photo sets are increasingly used in private communications to reinforce the illusion of a real, emotionally invested partner. These tools allow foreign-based actors to operate at scale while maintaining high credibility.
Authorities emphasize that romance scams are not limited by age, education level, or technical sophistication. While older adults remain heavily targeted due to accumulated savings and retirement funds, younger victims are increasingly affected through social platforms and investment-themed romance fraud.
Federal guidance urges individuals who form online romantic relationships to verify identities independently, avoid sharing personal or financial information, and refuse any request for money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency from individuals they have not met in person. Attempts to create emotional urgency, secrecy, or isolation are considered strong indicators of fraud.
Victims or individuals who suspect an online relationship may be fraudulent are advised to immediately cease communication and report the activity to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), even if no financial loss has occurred. Early reporting allows analysts to identify patterns, disrupt active networks, and prevent additional victims from being targeted.
Federal authorities stress that reporting is not an admission of fault. Romance scams are engineered to exploit trust, emotion, and human connection — vulnerabilities that are universal rather than personal failures.
As online interaction increasingly substitutes for face-to-face connection, investigators warn that romance scams will continue evolving in sophistication. Awareness, verification, and timely reporting remain the most effective countermeasures against a form of fraud that preys not only on finances, but on trust itself.

ugh these are the worst. playing with peoples emotions
You’re absolutely right, Rojie. That’s what makes these scams especially cruel — they don’t just steal money, they exploit trust and emotional vulnerability. The damage often runs far deeper than the financial loss. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment on the article. I hope you have a great night and day ahead. 😎
“Victims or individuals who suspect an online relationship may be fraudulent are advised to immediately cease communication and report the activity to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).”
It is important that anyone “meeting” someone on line knows this.
If we have we gotten to the point where online interaction is increasingly substituting for face-to-face connections, we are in real trouble. So many of us interact with people online every day but would never use it as a platform to “get to know” someone in a romantic way. Sure, connections can be made but the face-to-face that comes after that is the important thing. It’s sad that so many people are lonely enough that they would actually send hard-earned money to a person they have never met. For trust to develop I need to meet the person and then they have to earn my trust over time and I hope they view me the same way. I suppose these cons have gone on in face-to-face interactions for centuries. People need to be cautious whether it’s online or face-to-face.
Thank you for today’s articles, John. I hope you have a great evening and I wish you and your family God’s blessings…
You’re very welcome, Chris. You raise an important point — online interaction has become a substitute for connection in ways that carry real risk, especially when it replaces the grounding that comes from face-to-face interaction. Loneliness is a powerful vulnerability, and these scams are designed to exploit that human need for connection and trust. You’re also right that deception isn’t new; the medium has changed, but the underlying dynamics haven’t. Caution, verification, and time are still essential, whether online or in person. Thank you for engaging so thoughtfully with today’s articles, and I truly appreciate your kind words. I hope you and your family have a peaceful evening and continued blessings as well. 🙏😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for your thoughtful reply. Loneliness is, indeed, a powerful vulnerability. I can see why scammers design this kind of stuff because people keep falling for it. Thank you for your kind words and I hope you have a wonderful day! 🙂
