FBI OPENS APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER 2027 HONORS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has opened the application window for its Summer 2027 Honors Internship Program, inviting full-time undergraduate and graduate students nationwide to apply for one of its most competitive early-career pathways. The application period began on February 9, 2026, and will close on March 5, 2026.

The Honors Internship Program serves as the Bureau’s primary paid internship initiative for college students seeking exposure to federal law enforcement and national security operations. Selected participants will complete a 10-week assignment either at FBI Headquarters or within one of the Bureau’s 56 field offices across the United States. The program is structured to provide operational insight into investigative support, intelligence analysis, administrative functions, and mission-driven projects aligned with federal priorities.

Interns work alongside Special Agents, intelligence analysts, and professional staff, contributing to investigative support functions and strategic initiatives. Assignments may involve research, data analysis, operational coordination, legal review support, cybersecurity assistance, and administrative project management, depending on the intern’s academic background and security clearance eligibility.

The program remains highly selective. Applicants must be United States citizens, enrolled as full-time students in accredited undergraduate or graduate programs, maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, and successfully complete an FBI background investigation. Additional eligibility requirements apply, including adherence to federal suitability standards and security vetting protocols. The background process typically includes fingerprinting, financial review, employment history verification, and potential polygraph examination depending on placement.

The FBI actively recruits students from diverse academic disciplines beyond criminal justice and law enforcement studies. Competitive candidates often come from fields such as cybersecurity, computer science, finance, accounting, engineering, foreign languages, intelligence studies, forensic science, public administration, and legal studies. The Bureau emphasizes analytical reasoning, ethical decision-making, written and verbal communication proficiency, and demonstrated initiative as core evaluation criteria.

At the field office level, internship placements offer localized exposure to regional investigative priorities while contributing to broader national security objectives. In areas such as Hampton Roads, placements may intersect with maritime security, counterintelligence, cyber investigations, public corruption cases, violent crime task forces, or counterterrorism coordination, depending on operational demands during the internship cycle.

The Honors Internship Program has historically functioned as a pipeline into full-time federal service. Successful interns may gain familiarity with hiring pathways for Special Agents, Intelligence Analysts, and Professional Staff roles, although participation does not guarantee employment. The program is structured as an experiential development opportunity designed to expose students to federal investigative culture, compliance standards, and interagency coordination environments.

Applicants are required to submit materials through the FBI’s official student recruitment portal prior to the March 5, 2026 deadline. Questions regarding the Summer 2027 program may be directed to the FBI Norfolk Recruiting Team via the designated recruitment email address provided in the official announcement.

The Honors Internship Program remains one of the Bureau’s flagship early-career initiatives, designed to identify and cultivate prospective candidates capable of meeting the ethical, analytical, and operational standards required for federal investigative service.

Applications, eligibility criteria, and detailed program requirements are available through the official FBI student recruitment portal under the Students and Graduates section of FBIJOBS. Prospective applicants are advised to review all qualification standards carefully prior to submission, as background investigation and suitability requirements are rigorous and time-intensive.
