Chicago Man Convicted of Sex Trafficking a Minor in Suburban Illinois

A federal jury in Chicago has convicted a Chicago man of sex trafficking a minor after determining that he recruited and exploited a 15-year-old girl for commercial sex activity in a suburban Illinois motel.

Kennard Cameron, 40, of Chicago, was found guilty of one count of sex trafficking of a minor and one count of conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of a minor. The verdict followed a week-long trial in United States District Court in Chicago.

According to evidence presented at trial, Cameron recruited the 15-year-old victim in 2023 and transported her to a motel in Lansing, Illinois, where he arranged commercial encounters with individuals responding to online advertisements. Prosecutors established that Cameron photographed the victim and used those images to create advertisements promoting commercial sex acts.

Investigators determined that Cameron coordinated the encounters and, together with a co-conspirator, required the victim to surrender the proceeds generated from those meetings. The trafficking activity took place within the Chicago metropolitan area and relied on online advertising platforms to solicit customers.

Federal prosecutors charged Cameron under 18 U.S.C. § 1591, a statute that criminalizes the recruitment, harboring, transportation, or exploitation of a minor for commercial sex acts. When the victim is under the age of 18, federal law treats the conduct as sex trafficking regardless of whether force, fraud, or coercion is used.

Cameron faces a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in federal prison and a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. United States District Judge John Robert Blakey scheduled sentencing for September 16, 2026.

The conviction was announced by Andrew S. Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Douglas S. DePodesta, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The case was investigated by the FBI Chicago Field Office. Assistant United States Attorneys Jennifer Chang and Caitlin Walgamuth prosecuted the case.
