AUSTIN, TEXAS — Federal and local investigators continue to analyze evidence and pursue leads following a March 1, 2026 targeted shooting in Austin that left three people dead and fifteen others injured, prompting one of the largest coordinated investigative responses in the region in recent years.
The incident unfolded along Rio Grande Street, an area located near the University of Texas campus and several residential and nightlife districts that routinely attract heavy pedestrian activity. Authorities stated that officers from the Austin Police Department (APD) responded rapidly to the scene after reports of gunfire, confronting the situation while emergency medical personnel began treating victims.
According to investigators, the individual responsible for the attack was identified as Ndiaga Diagne, who sustained fatal injuries during the incident. Authorities have not indicated that any additional suspects directly participated in the shooting, though investigators continue to examine whether the perpetrator had associates or outside influences connected to the event.
The shooting resulted in the deaths of three victims, while fifteen others suffered injuries ranging from gunshot wounds to trauma sustained during the chaotic aftermath. Emergency responders from Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services and the Austin Fire Department worked alongside police officers to stabilize victims and transport them to nearby hospitals.
Federal authorities were notified shortly after the attack and deployed investigative resources from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which has since mobilized more than 150 personnel to support the ongoing investigation. Multiple FBI field offices, along with specialized divisions at FBI Headquarters, have joined the effort.
Investigators are currently conducting a wide-ranging examination of both physical and digital evidence connected to the case. Evidence recovery operations connected to the suspect, including the search of his last known residence, have been completed as part of the investigative process.
Authorities confirmed that teams of agents and analysts are reviewing communications records, digital activity, and other forms of electronic evidence in an effort to reconstruct the timeline leading up to the attack and identify any indicators of motive.
Several specialized FBI operational units have been deployed to assist with the technical aspects of the investigation. These include Special Agent Bomb Technicians, who evaluate explosive-related threats or materials that may be present in violent incidents; the Evidence Response Team, responsible for systematic crime-scene processing and forensic collection; and the Computer Analysis Response Team, which performs digital forensic examinations of electronic devices.
Investigators are also relying on the Digital Video Retrieval Team, a specialized unit trained to acquire and analyze visual media from surveillance cameras, mobile devices, and other recording systems. That team has already collected more than 2,000 digital images and video recordings, including footage from closed-circuit cameras and other sources in the surrounding area. The material is being processed and analyzed to determine the movements of the suspect and the sequence of events before and during the attack.
Additional technical support is being provided by the Cellular Analysis Survey Team, which conducts location-based analysis using mobile device data to identify patterns of movement and possible connections between individuals present at or near the scene. Investigators are also receiving assistance from the Crisis Management Team, Language Services Section, and the FBI Victim Services Division, which provides support to victims and their families during the investigative and recovery process.
Authorities have confirmed that investigators are examining potential motives behind the attack, including reviewing personal history, communications, and associations linked to the suspect. Officials emphasized that identifying the motive remains a critical objective of the investigation.
A Virtual Family Assistance Center has been established to provide centralized access to services for victims and relatives affected by the shooting. The center offers guidance on available support programs, counseling resources, and assistance with navigating investigative updates.
The investigation has involved extensive cooperation among federal, state, and local agencies. Departments and units participating in the response include the Austin Police Department, Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services, Austin Fire Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, including the Texas Rangers, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, the University of Texas at Austin Police Department, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, the United States Marshals Service, Pflugerville Police Department, San Antonio Police Department, Cibolo Police Department, and Homeland Security Investigations.
Federal prosecutors with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas are assisting investigators with legal processes connected to the case. As part of the investigation, authorities have issued approximately 38 subpoenas and executed eight search warrants, including warrants connected to residential locations, electronic devices, and several online accounts associated with email, social media, and other digital communications.
Officials emphasized that investigators continue to analyze evidence and follow all credible leads related to the attack. Authorities have also urged members of the public who may possess information, images, or video connected to the events of March 1 to provide those materials to investigators as the investigation continues.
The case remains an active federal investigation.

You’re very welcome, Chris — and I appreciate that.
Cases like this often require cooperation between federal, state, and local agencies because each level of law enforcement may have different pieces of information, jurisdiction, or investigative resources. When those efforts are coordinated effectively, it can help investigators build a clearer picture of what happened and determine whether others may have been involved.
Thank you again for reading the articles and for sharing your thoughts, Chris. I truly appreciate it. I hope you have a great night as well, and God’s blessings to you and yours always. 😎
