Four members of a Houston-based criminal street gang have been convicted in federal court for carrying out a coordinated series of bank-related robberies and “juggings” across Southeast Texas, a pattern of crimes that targeted financial institutions and bank customers carrying cash.
Federal prosecutors confirmed that Charles Bernard Byrd, also known as “Doughboy,” 34, of Houston, was found guilty by a federal jury of conspiracy to commit bank robbery and aiding and abetting bank robbery following a four-day trial in Beaumont, Texas.
Byrd’s co-defendants — Kendrick Douglas Warren (“Bullet”), 38; Derrick Deshaun Brooks (“D-Brooks”), 36; and Derramy Deonita Foster, 42 — previously pleaded guilty in connection with the same criminal operation.
The case stems from a series of coordinated robberies and thefts carried out during late 2024, when investigators say the group targeted ATM service technicians and bank customers who were believed to be handling large amounts of cash.
According to evidence presented in federal court, investigators from the Beaumont Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation began tracking a pattern of robberies that involved masked suspects who struck quickly and fled before police could respond.
One of the most significant incidents occurred on October 8, 2024, when two masked individuals approached an ATM repair technician servicing a machine at a PNC Bank drive-through location on Phelan Boulevard in Beaumont.
The suspects forced the technician aside and removed $153,000 in bank cash from the ATM vault before fleeing the scene in a black sedan.
Authorities said the entire robbery lasted less than twenty seconds, highlighting the level of planning involved in the attack.
Although surveillance cameras captured the robbery, investigators initially had no immediate suspects.
The group struck again on December 31, 2024, targeting another ATM technician servicing equipment at Education First Federal Credit Union on Laurel Avenue in Beaumont.
During that robbery, two masked men rushed the technician and ordered him to move away from the machine before seizing $146,000 in bank funds.
The suspects fled in a stolen red sport utility vehicle, again completing the robbery in under twenty seconds.
The break in the case came shortly afterward when a Beaumont police officer located the red SUV abandoned in a nearby parking lot roughly fifteen minutes after the robbery.
Although the license plate had been removed, investigators used automated license plate reader data collected earlier in the day to trace the vehicle’s movements.
Those records showed that the SUV had traveled from Houston to Beaumont alongside a black pickup truck registered to Derrick Brooks, linking the vehicles involved in the robbery.
Investigators soon determined that the same black pickup truck had left Beaumont shortly after the robbery and was traveling west toward Houston along Interstate 10.
Beaumont police alerted regional authorities, and the Houston Police Department Criminal Apprehension Team quickly located and stopped the truck as it exited Interstate 10 in Houston.
The stop occurred only 84 minutes after the Beaumont robbery.
When officers searched the vehicle, they found Charles Byrd behind the wheel, with Warren and Brooks riding as passengers.
Inside the truck, officers discovered a bag containing exactly $146,000 in cash, matching the amount stolen from the credit union earlier that afternoon.
Investigators also recovered gloves similar to those used during the robbery and a Texas paper license plate linked to the stolen SUV used in the crime.
Further investigation revealed that the suspects were members of the 100% Third Ward gang, a Houston-based criminal group also known as the “103 gang.”
Authorities say the group operates primarily out of the Third Ward area of Houston and has been linked to a range of criminal activities, including robberies, burglaries, and organized theft operations.
A major component of the gang’s activity involved “juggings,” a type of robbery in which suspects watch individuals leaving banks or financial institutions and then follow them to another location before stealing cash or valuables.
Investigators documented one such incident that occurred less than an hour before the New Year’s Eve credit union robbery.
During that event, gang members allegedly conducted surveillance at a Chase Bank drive-through on Dowlen Road in Beaumont, watching for customers who withdrew large amounts of cash.
After identifying a potential victim who received a cash pouch from the teller, the suspects followed her vehicle to a nearby grocery store parking lot.
Once the victim entered the store, the suspects smashed the window of her vehicle and burglarized it while she was inside shopping.
Prosecutors argued that the robbery and burglary were part of a broader conspiracy carried out by the group between October 1 and December 31, 2024, during which the defendants committed multiple robberies, burglaries, auto thefts, and coordinated surveillance operations.
Byrd now faces up to 25 years in federal prison when he is sentenced.
Warren has already pleaded guilty to conspiracy and bank robbery and faces a potential 25-year sentence.
Brooks pleaded guilty to conspiracy and two counts of bank robbery, exposing him to a possible 45-year federal prison sentence.
Foster pleaded guilty to bank robbery and faces up to 20 years in prison.
Sentencing hearings for the defendants will be scheduled following the completion of presentence investigations conducted by the U.S. Probation Office.
The case involved coordination among multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Beaumont Police Department, Houston Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Memorial Villages Police Department, West University Police Department, Shiner Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Federal prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas handled the case.
Authorities say the convictions dismantle a robbery operation that relied on surveillance, rapid execution, and coordinated getaway tactics to steal large amounts of cash from financial institutions and bank customers.
