Nearly two decades after the disappearance of retired federal investigator Robert A. “Bob” Levinson, U.S. authorities are again renewing calls for information as the anniversary of his abduction passes without definitive answers. Levinson vanished in 2007 while traveling on Kish Island, Iran, a resort destination in the Persian Gulf that has long served as a hub for international visitors and commercial activity.
The FBI’s Washington Field Office issued a statement marking the 19th anniversary of Levinson’s disappearance, reaffirming that the investigation remains active and that federal authorities continue to pursue intelligence leads related to his abduction, captivity, and likely death.
Levinson’s disappearance has become one of the most enduring unresolved hostage cases in modern American history. The U.S. government considers him the longest-held American hostage ever recorded, and the case remains a central focus of federal investigators working across multiple intelligence and law enforcement agencies.
Levinson, a veteran federal investigator with decades of experience in narcotics and organized crime cases, traveled to Kish Island in March 2007. Shortly after his arrival, contact with him was lost. Subsequent intelligence assessments concluded that he had been taken into custody by individuals connected to Iranian intelligence services.
Before joining the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1976, Levinson spent six years with the Drug Enforcement Administration, building investigative experience in narcotics enforcement and international criminal networks. His career with the FBI lasted 22 years, during which he worked on major organized crime and corruption investigations before retiring in 1998.
After retirement, Levinson continued to travel internationally in a consulting capacity, maintaining professional ties to investigative and analytical work.
In the years following his disappearance, scattered evidence emerged suggesting that Levinson had been held by Iranian authorities or by groups operating under the influence of Iranian intelligence services. Photographs and videos surfaced showing him in captivity, confirming that he remained alive for some time after his disappearance.
Intelligence assessments conducted by U.S. authorities later determined that the most credible evidence suggests Levinson died in Iranian custody sometime before 2020. Despite that assessment, investigators continue to pursue information that could clarify the circumstances of his captivity and confirm the timeline of events leading to his death.
The FBI emphasized that resolving the case remains a priority for investigators and that the bureau continues to allocate personnel and analytical resources to the investigation.
Federal investigators have also released seeking-information posters identifying several Iranian intelligence officials believed to have played roles in Levinson’s abduction and detention. The individuals named in those materials include Mohammad Baseri, Ahmad Khazai, Reza Amiri Moghadam, Taghi Daneshvar, and Gholamhossein Mohammadnia.
According to investigative findings, Baseri and Khazai were officials within Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security during the period when Levinson disappeared and were believed to have direct knowledge of the operation that led to his detention.
Daneshvar reportedly supervised Baseri’s activities during that timeframe, while Moghadam previously directed an operational unit within the Iranian intelligence apparatus and later assumed diplomatic responsibilities as Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan.
Investigators also identified Mohammadnia as an official who allegedly participated in efforts to obscure Iranian involvement by promoting alternative narratives about Levinson’s disappearance.
The disappearance of Levinson unfolded during a period of heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, particularly over nuclear development, sanctions, and regional security concerns. Intelligence analysts have long viewed the case as emblematic of the complex intelligence conflicts that unfold behind diplomatic and geopolitical disputes.
Hostage-taking and detention of foreign nationals have periodically been used by states and non-state actors alike as instruments of political leverage, intelligence gathering, or diplomatic pressure. Levinson’s case has frequently been cited by analysts studying the use of covert detention operations tied to intelligence agencies.
For Levinson’s family, the passing of time has brought little clarity. The anniversary of his disappearance coincides closely with what would have been his 78th birthday, underscoring the enduring absence felt by relatives who have spent nearly two decades seeking answers.
Federal authorities continue to encourage individuals with knowledge related to Levinson’s disappearance to come forward. The FBI maintains a reward of up to $5 million for information that leads to determining Levinson’s location or clarifies the circumstances surrounding his captivity and death.
An additional reward of up to $20 million is available through the U.S. State Department’s Rewards for Justice program, bringing the total potential reward to $25 million for information that helps identify, locate, or prosecute individuals responsible for Levinson’s abduction.
Investigators emphasize that the search for information remains active and that new leads continue to be evaluated by analysts and agents working the case.
Nineteen years after his disappearance, the case of Robert Levinson remains unresolved — a reminder of the enduring challenges faced by investigators working to uncover the fate of Americans who vanish abroad under circumstances tied to international intelligence operations.

This is probably a good time to try and get some information on what happened to Robert A. “Bob” Levinson. With chaos in Iran, information might be more easy to obtain and with reward figures that high there may be a break in this case. According to his family, Bob suffered from type 1 diabetes, gout, and hypertension. I know that gout can be very painful and with these other medical problems there is probably little hope he will ever be seen alive again. Reading through information about this case, I appreciate the efforts the government has made to find out where Mr. Levinson is or at least what happened to him. I appreciate the continued efforts.
Thank you for this article.
You’re very welcome, Chris.
The Levinson case has remained one of the most difficult and long-running missing American investigations. As you mentioned, the reward offered for information has been very substantial for years, and investigators have continued to pursue leads wherever they may appear. Situations involving political instability can sometimes open small windows for information, although it’s never certain whether anything new will surface.
You’re also right to point out the health concerns that were reported by his family. Conditions like diabetes and gout can be very serious without proper treatment, which has always added another layer of concern to this case.
Even after so many years, the continued efforts to determine what happened to Robert Levinson and to provide answers for his family remain important. Cases like this often stay active far longer than many people realize. Like you, I hope they can find resolution.
Thank you again for reading the article and for leaving a thoughtful comment, Chris. I always greatly appreciate it. 😎
