Federal authorities have filed carjacking and firearms charges against a Houston teenager accused of carrying out a fatal shooting in the Heights neighborhood before fleeing in the victim’s vehicle and leading law enforcement on a pursuit through the city.
Prosecutors in the Southern District of Texas announced that Darius Dewayne Hall, 18, of Houston, is facing federal charges connected to the violent carjacking and homicide that occurred on the evening of March 6. Hall is currently in custody on related state charges and is expected to make an appearance in federal court in the near future.
According to allegations outlined in a federal criminal complaint, the incident began after the victim spent the day receiving treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. After leaving the medical facility, she reportedly drove a friend to an apartment complex located in the Heights area before parking her vehicle nearby and walking back toward the residence.
Investigators say the situation turned violent moments later.
Witnesses in the area reported hearing a woman scream followed by a loud popping sound consistent with a gunshot. Authorities allege that Hall approached the victim and shot her once in the neck before going through her purse and stealing the vehicle she had been driving, a 2019 Toyota Highlander.
Emergency responders transported the victim to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced her dead shortly after midnight.
Federal authorities allege that Hall fled the scene in the stolen SUV following the shooting.
Law enforcement officers later located the Toyota Highlander and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. According to the complaint, the driver refused to pull over, leading to a short vehicle pursuit through Houston streets.
The pursuit ended when the stolen vehicle crashed.
Investigators say Hall then exited the vehicle from the driver’s side and attempted to evade arrest on foot, triggering a foot pursuit by responding officers.
During the chase, authorities recovered clothing that Hall allegedly discarded while running in an apparent attempt to avoid identification. Investigators say the clothing matched items worn by the suspect seen near the scene of the shooting.
Law enforcement officers ultimately took Hall into custody following the pursuit.
Federal prosecutors allege that the evidence collected during the investigation connects Hall to both the fatal shooting and the theft of the vehicle used in the escape.
Carjacking cases involving serious bodily injury or death fall under federal jurisdiction due to the interstate commerce aspects of motor vehicles and the severity of the offense. When a death occurs during the commission of a carjacking, federal law allows for some of the most severe criminal penalties available in the federal justice system.
If convicted of the federal carjacking charge, Hall could face a sentence of up to life in prison or potentially the death penalty depending on the outcome of the case and prosecutorial decisions regarding capital punishment.
The firearms charge tied to the alleged offense carries a mandatory minimum penalty of ten years in federal prison and could also result in a life sentence if the defendant is convicted.
Both charges also carry potential financial penalties of up to $250,000.
Federal authorities say the case remains under active investigation as they continue reviewing evidence related to the shooting, the vehicle pursuit, and the events leading up to the fatal encounter.
The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Houston Field Office with assistance from the Houston Police Department.
Assistant United States Attorney Byron H. Black is prosecuting the federal case.
As with all criminal complaints, the charges filed against Hall represent allegations at this stage of the legal process. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty through due process of law in federal court.
The case now moves forward through the federal judicial system as prosecutors prepare for the next phase of proceedings.

Lord have mercy. This is a case of blatant disregard for the life of another human being. That “the incident began after the victim spent the day receiving treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston” adds another layer to this story. I have a relative who has spent time at that Cancer Center. This suspect is so young. The entire story is heartbreaking. Life is so cheap to some these days. I pray that the suspect gets a fair trial and the correct sentence if found guilty.
Thank you for this article.
You’re very welcome, Chris.
Cases like this are heartbreaking, especially when the circumstances surrounding the victim add another layer to the tragedy. Learning that the victim had spent part of the day receiving treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center makes the situation even more difficult to read about. Incidents like this remind us how quickly lives can be changed by acts of violence.
You also make an important point about how young the suspect is. Situations like this often leave families and communities struggling to understand how something so tragic could happen.
Thank you again for taking the time to read the article and for sharing your thoughts, Chris. I hope you have a great night and day ahead. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for this reply. Tragic is a good word for this entire situation. It seems so senseless. I hope this young man turns to God for help because he will be needing it and there is no better place to go. He will have time to reevaluate how he got himself into such an evil situation and hopefully the severity of his actions will hit him someday and take him to a place of repentance. The world will hold him accountable but the world can’t forgive him.
His long prison sentence will not reform him except that he may cross the paths of others who have done similar things who have reached out to God for help.
I really feel for the family of the victim. I pray that God gives them strength during this time of mourning.
I hope you have a great day as well, John! 🙂
