Federal authorities have arrested a Florida man accused of orchestrating a series of fraud schemes that allegedly diverted large shipments of onions and potatoes from wholesale suppliers, resulting in losses exceeding half a million dollars.
Jason Canals, 39, of Spring Hill, Florida, has been charged in a federal indictment with eight counts of interstate transportation of stolen property. The charges were announced by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida following his arrest.
If convicted on all counts, Canals faces a maximum potential penalty of ten years in federal prison. Prosecutors have also indicated that the government intends to seek forfeiture of any proceeds linked to the alleged criminal activity.
According to federal investigators, the case centers on multiple schemes targeting wholesale produce suppliers and distributors operating in interstate commerce.
Prosecutors allege that Canals fraudulently obtained large shipments of produce by impersonating legitimate companies and manipulating supply orders during the delivery process. The schemes reportedly involved thousands of pounds of onions and potatoes that were diverted before reaching their intended destinations.
In one alleged scheme described in the indictment, Canals used the name of a legitimate company without authorization to place orders with produce distributors. Investigators say he copied the company’s email signature block and other identifying details to make the communications appear authentic.
After the orders were placed and the shipments were already in transit, prosecutors allege that Canals redirected the deliveries to alternate locations under his control. The victim companies, believing they were conducting legitimate business transactions, shipped the produce but never received payment.
Federal authorities say a second scheme involved the use of falsified documentation intended to convince suppliers that payment had already been made. Investigators allege Canals provided paperwork suggesting that invoices for the produce had been prepaid, allowing shipments to be released even though no funds had actually been transferred.
These tactics allegedly allowed the defendant to obtain large volumes of produce without paying the wholesale suppliers responsible for the goods.
Investigators estimate that the combined value of the produce and the associated transportation costs resulted in financial losses exceeding $600,000 for the affected companies.
Cases involving interstate transportation of stolen property fall under federal jurisdiction when stolen goods move across state lines as part of a criminal scheme. Federal statutes covering such conduct are often used to prosecute organized fraud operations that involve shipment diversion, cargo theft, and similar transportation-related crimes.
Cargo theft and supply chain fraud remain ongoing concerns within the agricultural and food distribution industries. Produce shipments can be particularly vulnerable to diversion schemes because of the high volume of shipments moving through distribution networks and the time-sensitive nature of perishable goods.
Authorities say the investigation into the alleged schemes involved coordination between federal agencies responsible for protecting agricultural commerce and those focused on financial and interstate fraud.
The case was investigated jointly by the United States Department of Agriculture Office of Inspector General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Assistant United States Attorney Merrilyn E. Hoenemeyer will prosecute the case on behalf of the federal government.
As with all criminal indictments, the charges represent allegations at this stage of the legal process. The defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in federal court.
The case will proceed through the federal judicial system in the Middle District of Florida as prosecutors prepare for the next phase of court proceedings.
