A Pittsburgh man who had already been sentenced to a decade in federal prison for fentanyl trafficking and illegal firearm possession is now facing additional prison time after admitting he fled instead of reporting to prison and resumed distributing deadly narcotics while on the run.
Federal prosecutors in the Western District of Pennsylvania announced that Julian Thompson, 33, pleaded guilty in federal court to failing to surrender for service of a prison sentence and to distributing a mixture containing fentanyl and heroin while he was a fugitive. The plea was entered before United States District Judge W. Scott Hardy in Pittsburgh, bringing an end to a months-long investigation that involved multiple federal agencies tracking Thompson after he ignored a court order to report to prison.
Court records show that Thompson had already been sentenced on November 21, 2024, to serve ten years in federal prison following convictions for possession with intent to distribute more than 40 grams of fentanyl and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. At the time of sentencing, the court granted Thompson permission to self-surrender to the Federal Bureau of Prisons at a later date, a process sometimes allowed for non-violent offenders so they can arrange personal affairs before beginning their prison term.
Instead of reporting as ordered, Thompson failed to appear, triggering a fugitive investigation led by the U.S. Marshals Service Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force. Once an individual fails to surrender for a federal sentence, the case immediately transitions from a routine prison intake matter into a fugitive search, with law enforcement agencies authorized to locate and arrest the individual under a federal warrant.
Investigators eventually learned during the summer of 2025 that Thompson had returned to Pittsburgh and was again involved in narcotics trafficking. That discovery emerged during a separate drug investigation being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Agents began monitoring activity connected to Thompson and ultimately conducted a controlled purchase of narcotics from him in September 2025.
According to prosecutors, that transaction involved more than 250 glassine bags containing a mixture of fentanyl and heroin. Glassine bags are commonly used in street-level narcotics distribution, particularly for heroin and fentanyl mixtures, with each bag typically representing a single dose intended for sale to users.
Fentanyl remains one of the most dangerous synthetic opioids circulating in illegal drug markets in the United States. Even small quantities can cause fatal overdoses, and mixtures of fentanyl with heroin significantly increase the risk to users who may not know the exact potency of what they are consuming.
Following the controlled purchase, federal authorities moved to shut down Thompson’s operation. Agents executed search warrants targeting Thompson and a residence connected to the investigation, while also serving the outstanding arrest warrant related to his failure to surrender for his original prison sentence.
During the searches, investigators seized a loaded drum magazine, jewelry, and approximately $65,900 in cash believed to be connected to narcotics trafficking activity. Large cash seizures are commonly associated with illegal drug distribution networks, as street-level narcotics sales are frequently conducted in cash to avoid financial tracking systems used by law enforcement.
Thompson was taken into custody and now faces additional penalties beyond the ten-year prison sentence he had originally attempted to evade.
Under federal law, the failure-to-surrender charge carries a potential penalty of up to ten years in prison. Importantly, any sentence imposed for failing to surrender must be served consecutively to the original sentence, meaning the punishment is added on top of the time already ordered by the court.
The narcotics distribution charge carries a potential penalty of up to thirty years in prison and fines that can reach two million dollars, depending on the circumstances of the offense and the defendant’s criminal history.
Federal sentencing guidelines will play a role in determining the final sentence. Those guidelines consider the seriousness of the offense, the quantity of drugs involved, and the defendant’s prior criminal record when recommending a sentencing range to the court.
Judge Hardy has scheduled Thompson’s sentencing hearing for July 21, 2026. Until that time, the court has ordered him to remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brendan J. McKenna on behalf of the federal government.
The investigation that led to Thompson’s arrest and guilty plea involved coordinated efforts by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, reflecting the type of joint enforcement approach commonly used in federal narcotics and fugitive cases. Fugitive task forces across the country routinely combine the resources of federal, state, and local law enforcement to locate individuals who attempt to evade federal sentences or arrest warrants.
Thompson’s case highlights a recurring pattern seen in federal drug enforcement investigations: individuals already convicted of serious narcotics offenses continuing to participate in the illegal drug trade even while facing existing prison sentences. When those individuals fail to surrender to begin serving their sentences, the legal consequences often become significantly more severe.
For law enforcement officials combating the spread of fentanyl across American communities, cases like this represent the intersection of two persistent challenges — the lethal nature of synthetic opioids in modern drug markets and the difficulty of dismantling distribution networks that continue operating even after previous convictions and sentencing orders.
