Federal prosecutors in Hawaii have charged a second suspect in a homicide tied to a methamphetamine trafficking dispute, a case investigators say reflects the violent consequences that often accompany organized drug distribution networks.
Authorities announced that Taliau Tauvela-Afalava, 31, of Aiea, Hawaii, made his initial appearance in federal court in Honolulu after being charged for his alleged role in the killing of Malakai Maumalanga. Prosecutors say the murder stemmed from a dispute connected to unpaid methamphetamine tied to a drug distribution conspiracy operating in the region.
The charges against Tauvela-Afalava come through a superseding federal indictment that adds him as a co-defendant alongside Filimone Tavake, 38, of San Francisco. Tavake was originally indicted by a federal grand jury in March 2024 and arrested shortly after the indictment was issued.
According to investigators, the fatal shooting occurred on March 27, 2021, outside the victim’s residence. Authorities allege the killing was connected to the victim’s alleged failure to pay for methamphetamine linked to the broader drug trafficking conspiracy.
Court documents describe a calculated sequence of events captured in part through surveillance footage obtained during the investigation.
Investigators say a vehicle with no license plates was seen driving near the victim’s home shortly before the shooting. The vehicle later parked nearby, and video footage captured two individuals exiting the vehicle and walking toward the street where the victim lived.
Moments later, multiple gunshots were heard on the surveillance recording. Shortly afterward, the same two individuals were seen running from the direction of the victim’s residence and returning to the vehicle before leaving the area.
Law enforcement officials later located the vehicle believed to have been used in the shooting. Investigators conducted a forensic analysis of the vehicle’s infotainment system, which can store digital data connected to mobile devices paired with the system.
According to prosecutors, that analysis linked the vehicle to phone numbers associated with both Tavake and Tauvela-Afalava, helping investigators place the two suspects in connection with the vehicle seen near the crime scene.
Federal authorities allege that Tauvela-Afalava and Tavake acted together in carrying out the shooting.
The indictment charges Tauvela-Afalava with several serious federal offenses, including carrying, using, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime. He is also charged with causing the death of a person through the use of a firearm, killing while engaged in a conspiracy to distribute and possess methamphetamine with intent to distribute, and participating in a narcotics distribution conspiracy.
If convicted, Tauvela-Afalava faces a mandatory minimum sentence of twenty years in federal prison and could receive a sentence of life imprisonment.
Federal authorities say the case illustrates the violent conflicts that frequently emerge within illegal drug markets, where financial disputes and territorial control can escalate into deadly confrontations.
Methamphetamine trafficking remains a significant concern for law enforcement across the Pacific region and the western United States. Federal investigators have identified methamphetamine distribution networks operating between mainland supply sources and island communities, often involving complex logistics and multiple participants within the distribution chain.
The case against Tauvela-Afalava represents the latest development in a multi-year investigation conducted by federal and local authorities.
Officials from the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Honolulu Police Department emphasized the cooperative nature of the investigation.
Authorities stated that federal and local law enforcement agencies worked together closely to identify suspects, gather forensic evidence, and build the case that ultimately led to the indictments.
The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Michael Nammar along with Trial Attorney Christina Taylor of the Justice Department’s Violent Crime and Racketeering Section.
Investigators with the FBI and the Honolulu Police Department continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the killing and the broader methamphetamine trafficking conspiracy connected to the case.
As with all criminal cases, the charges filed against Tauvela-Afalava remain allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in federal court.
If convicted, sentencing will be determined by a United States District Judge based on federal sentencing statutes and the advisory federal sentencing guidelines.
The case remains active as prosecutors continue preparing for further court proceedings involving both defendants.
