Jury rejects defense claims as evidence links defendant to automatic weapon used in crowded restaurant.

A Houston-area man has been convicted in federal court following a deadly shooting at a fast-food restaurant involving a handgun modified to function as a machine gun. The case centers on the unlawful possession of a converted firearm and its role in a fatal incident that resulted in the death of an uninvolved civilian.

Tyler John Jordan, 27, was found guilty by a federal jury after approximately three hours of deliberation following a three-day trial. The conviction stems from possession of a machine gun under federal law. Sentencing is scheduled for June 25 before U.S. District Judge Alfred Bennett. Jordan faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a potential fine of up to $250,000. He remains in custody pending sentencing.

According to evidence presented during trial, the incident occurred on March 16, 2025, at a McDonald’s located on North Fry Road in Katy, Texas. Prosecutors established that Jordan and others entered the restaurant with the intent to confront another group, leading to an altercation inside a crowded lobby.

During the confrontation, multiple rounds were discharged from a Glock pistol equipped with a machine gun conversion device, commonly referred to as a switch. This device enables a semi-automatic handgun to fire continuously with a single trigger pull, significantly increasing the rate of fire and reducing control over shot placement. One of the rounds struck and killed a 61-year-old bystander who was not involved in the altercation.

Investigators recovered digital evidence linking Jordan to the weapon, including a video on his phone showing him holding the firearm approximately five hours before the shooting. Testimony from law enforcement and forensic personnel established that Jordan had previously admitted to possessing the weapon and knowing it was configured as a machine gun. Additional testimony detailed multiple instances in which Jordan provided false statements during the investigation.

The defense argued that Jordan was unaware the firearm had been modified and challenged the reliability of his prior statements. The jury rejected those claims and returned a guilty verdict based on the evidence presented.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Anh-Khoa Tran and Charles Hagerman prosecuted the case.
