Man Arrested in Colombia in Alleged Plot to Murder or Kidnap Foreign Dissidents in International Terrorism Case

A man accused of orchestrating an international plot to kidnap or assassinate two political dissidents abroad has been arrested in Colombia and now faces multiple terrorism-related charges in federal court in New York.

Denis Alimov, 42, also known by several aliases including Denis Nazarovich Alimov, Denis N. Alimov, Denis Nevsky, Dionis Nevsky, Denis Klimenkov, and Denis Nazarovich Klimenkov, was arrested on February 24, 2026, in Bogotá, Colombia, pursuant to an Interpol Red Notice issued in connection with a superseding indictment filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Federal authorities have announced plans to seek Alimov’s extradition to the United States. The case is assigned to U.S. District Judge John P. Cronan.

According to the superseding indictment, Alimov is accused of participating in a coordinated international conspiracy to kidnap or murder two well-known dissidents living abroad who had previously been targeted in multiple retaliation and assassination attempts.

Investigators allege that the conspiracy operated from at least October 2024 through March 2025 and involved financial payments, operational planning, and international travel in preparation for the potential attacks.

Federal investigators determined that in October 2024 Alimov met with an alleged co-conspirator, Darko Durovic, at a restaurant located near the headquarters of a foreign country’s internal security and counterintelligence service. During that meeting, Alimov allegedly paid Durovic approximately $60,000 to begin financing the operation.

According to the indictment, Alimov also promised to pay approximately $1.5 million for each victim if the co-conspirator successfully carried out the kidnapping or assassination of the targeted dissidents.

Following the meeting, prosecutors allege that Alimov maintained ongoing communications with Durovic regarding operational planning and progress. The communications allegedly included the transmission of IP address data and telephone information linked to one of the intended targets.

Investigators further allege that Durovic conducted research on firearms, including Glock pistols, while preparing for travel to Europe in order to locate one of the targeted individuals. The indictment states that Durovic later traveled to a second European country to locate another target and recruited an additional conspirator to assist in the operation.

During those discussions, the co-conspirators allegedly referenced the need to finance what they described as a “hunting team” to track down the intended victims.

Durovic was arrested in March 2025 and his case remains pending before the same federal court in Manhattan.

The superseding indictment charges Alimov with multiple terrorism-related offenses, including:

• Conspiracy to commit murder and kidnapping in a foreign country
• Conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists
• Providing and attempting to provide material support to terrorists
• Conspiracy to finance terrorism
• Financing terrorism

If convicted, Alimov faces a maximum possible sentence of life imprisonment on the most serious charge. Additional counts carry statutory maximum penalties ranging from 15 to 20 years in federal prison.

Federal prosecutors noted that the penalties described in the indictment represent the maximum sentences authorized by Congress. Any sentence imposed would ultimately be determined by a federal judge following conviction.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI New York Counterintelligence Office with assistance from the FBI’s Counterintelligence and Espionage Division and the FBI International Operations Division. Authorities also coordinated with the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section, the Office of International Affairs of the Criminal Division, the United States Embassy in Colombia, and Colombian law enforcement authorities.

The prosecution is being handled by the National Security and International Narcotics Unit of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Assistant United States Attorneys Nicholas S. Bradley and Kaylan E. Lasky are leading the case, with assistance from Trial Attorney Michael Dittoe of the Department of Justice Counterterrorism Section.

The charges contained in the superseding indictment are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
