A federal grand jury in Pittsburgh has returned a multi-count indictment charging six individuals in connection with a late-night assault targeting a Jewish male in the Oakland neighborhood. The charges extend beyond the initial act of violence, outlining a coordinated effort among the defendants to obstruct a federal investigation through false statements and aligned testimony.
The seven-count indictment names Muhammed Koc, 27, of Pittsburgh; Omar Alshmari, 28, of Monroeville; Abraham Choudhry, 22, of Monroeville; Emirhan Arslan, 24, of McKees Rocks; Ali Alkhaleel, 19, of Pittsburgh; and Adeel Piracha, 22, of Murrysville. The defendants are charged under the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, along with obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice.
According to the indictment, the incident occurred on or about September 27, 2024, at approximately 2:01 a.m., when a group of individuals encountered the victim and directed antisemitic statements toward him after observing a necklace bearing a Star of David. The verbal confrontation escalated, with continued statements targeting the victim’s religious identity.
The indictment alleges that Muhammed Koc and Omar Alshmari then physically attacked the victim, acting in concert. The assault resulted in bodily injury, including physical pain, a split lip, and headaches. Federal charges assert that the attack was carried out because of the victim’s actual and perceived religion and identity, establishing the basis for hate crime violations.
Following the assault, the case evolved into a broader investigation involving digital communications and alleged coordination among the defendants. According to federal filings, Piracha and the other defendants engaged in discussions through social media messaging and group chats regarding the incident. Within those exchanges, Alshmari identified himself and Koc as participants in the assault referenced in a University of Pittsburgh crime alert.
Subsequent text communications allegedly included admissions by both Alshmari and Koc acknowledging their involvement in the attack. These communications became part of the evidentiary framework supporting the indictment.
The obstruction component of the case centers on allegations that the defendants coordinated their responses during the federal investigation. The indictment states that the group agreed to align their accounts and provided false and misleading testimony before a federal grand jury. Specific allegations include false statements regarding who struck the victim, whether the assault was motivated by the victim’s Jewish identity, and whether discussions occurred about how to respond to investigators.
From an enforcement standpoint, the case reflects a dual-layer prosecution model: addressing both the underlying act of violence and subsequent actions taken to interfere with the judicial process. The inclusion of obstruction and conspiracy charges expands the scope of the case beyond the initial incident, targeting conduct that allegedly sought to undermine federal investigative proceedings.
The charges carry significant potential penalties. The hate crime and obstruction counts each carry a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $250,000. The conspiracy to obstruct justice charge carries a maximum of up to five years in prison and similar financial penalties. Sentencing, if convictions are secured, will be determined based on federal guidelines and individual criminal histories.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI, with assistance from the University of Pittsburgh Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Carl J. Spindler and Trial Attorney Adam Hassanein of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.
The case demonstrates how post-incident behavior can materially expand criminal exposure, transforming an isolated act into a broader federal prosecution. Digital communications did not just document the event—they became evidentiary anchors that clarified intent, coordination, and subsequent efforts to influence the investigative process.
The indictment constitutes a formal accusation. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
